A ‘Hocus Pocus’ Musical May Soon Run Amok on Broadway

When the black flame candle is lit, it burns at both ends. Just as a highly-anticipated sequel to Disney’s Halloween classic Hocus Pocus begins streaming, plans for a Broadway musical are in motion, producer David Kirschner said in a recent interview.

“This started before COVID, but now it seems to be back on and this is that they are building a Broadway version of Hocus Pocus,” he told Broadway Podcast Network’s The Art of Kindness. “I just want to pinch myself, and I’m just afraid that I’m going to be 9 years old and on a Little League field again. But it’s just so wonderful just to stand back and watch all of this.” Kirschner couldn’t disclose casting details or a timeline just yet, but teased, “I think you’re going to be very pleased.”

Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy—who play the Sanderson sisters in both 1993’s Hocus Pocus and its new follow-up—have ties to the Broadway community. Midler won a Tony Award for 2017’s Hello Dolly!, while Parker starred in last season’s Plaza Suite revival alongside her husband Matthew Broderick, and Najimy appeared in 2000’s Dirty Blonde.

Kenny Ortega, director of the original film as well as movie musicals-turned-stage shows Newsies and High School Musical, is on board. “I’d love to do Hocus Pocus on Broadway, and perhaps Thomas Schumacher, the president of Disney Theatrical Group, would give me a call, and we could talk about it,” he told Forbes in 2020, adding, “I think a Hocus Pocus musical would be great fun, really great fun.”
