10 Best Teen Mystery Shows, Ranked By IMDb

[ad_1]

The second season of Peacock’s One Of Us Is Lying recently dropped, giving fans of the teen mystery genre a much-needed show to binge. Unfortunately, the second season is only eight episodes, so many fans will have likely binged the season in a day or two. Thankfully, One Of Us Is Lying is one of many teen TV shows out there that send characters on thrilling and often dangerous mysteries.

The rise of teen mystery shows predates the streaming era, with shows like Pretty Little Liars encouraging viewers to piece together clues in between weekly episode drops. However, the genre has become even more popular with the rise of streaming since fans no longer have to wait days to find out what happens next. While this might take some of the fun out of theorizing, it has made for a more enjoyable experience and led to the creation of more teen mystery series to enjoy. With offerings ranging from Nancy Drew to Outer Banks, fans of the drama are sure to find their new favorite among IMDb‘s highest-rated teen mystery shows.

Nancy Drew is one of the most beloved female mystery protagonists of all time, which is why it’s no surprise she has gotten several adaptations over the years. However, a fan favorite appears to be The CW’s Nancy Drew which follows 18-year-old Nancy as she gets sucked into investigating the mysterious Tiffany Hudson murder instead of going off to college.

A modern take on the character, Nancy Drew, is full of drama and mystery both in terms of the murder case and Nancy’s personal life. However, some critics have criticized the show for relying too much on mystery tropes and not carving out a unique space for itself, leading to a lower IMDb score.

9/10 One Of Us Is Lying (2021-) – 6.8

Watch On Peacock

Based on the teen book of the same name, One Of Us Is Lying follows a group of four students who get accused of murder when one of their classmates dies while serving detention with them. The Peacock original just dropped its second season, which sees the “Murder Club” actually involved in murder this time and follows them as they try to cover up their tracks.

The series does an excellent job of building suspense and mystery by using social media, which will no doubt connect with younger audiences. In a Pretty Little Liars-esque device, the “Murder Club” regularly receives anonymous messages that involve dares in order to keep their secrets safe, which ultimately end up causing more harm than good.

8/10 Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin (2022-) – 7.1

Watch On HBO Max

The fourth Pretty Little Liars series to air within the franchise, Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, takes on the usual mystery elements while introducing a more sinister slasher element to the story. After receiving cryptic and terrifying messages from “A,” five teens discover they are being punished for something tragic their mothers did 22 years ago.

While Pretty Little Liars: Original Sins follows the typical mystery tropes, it amps up the drama by including elements of slasher movies. The stakes are much higher for these liars because death feels much closer and more permanent than it did in its predecessor.

7/10 The Society (2019) – 7.1

The Society Season 1 Netflix

The Society aired for one season on Netflix before being canceled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The series begins when a group of high school students returns home after a canceled field trip to find everyone in their town has disappeared. As if that’s not bad enough, a forest appears surrounding the town, cutting the teens off from the outside world.

While the big mystery stems from what happened to everyone in the town while the teens were away, there are also several other mysteries at play as the teens attempt to set up rules in order to survive. Unfortunately for viewers, despite a unique and engaging premise, the mysteries central to the series are never solved since it was prematurely canceled.

6/10 Scream Queens (2015-2016) – 7.2

Scream Queens is not for the faint of heart since episodes regularly feature blood, gore, and violence. However, the show does present an interesting mystery as the girls try to find out who the serial killer is while trying to survive their heinous attacks. The best part is the series actually reveals the identity of the killer, and it’s a reveal that is worth it.

5/10 Twisted (2013) – 7.2

Watch On Hulu

The cast of ABC Family's Twisted

Twisted could have been one of Freeform’s best original shows, but the series was never given the chance to find its audience. After spending five years in juvenile detention for allegedly killing his aunt, Danny is released and returns to his hometown. His plans to reconnect with old friends are thwarted when he gets entangled in the murder of one of his classmates.

There are two great mysteries at play in Twisted. The first is that Danny must figure out who killed his classmate to clear his name and prove to the town he’s not what they suspect him to be. The other is that he’s harboring a secret of his own: the true identity of who killed his aunt. These two core mysteries will keep viewers engaged from start to finish.

4/10 The Lying Game (2011) – 7.3

Watch On Amazon Prime Video

The cast of The Lying Game

Loosely based on the Sara Shepard young adult series of the same name, The Lying Game follows Emma as she discovers she’s a twin and convinces said twin to switch places with her so she can try to track down their birth mother. However, disaster strikes when Emma and Sutton are supposed to switch back, only for Sutton to never return.

Like all great mysteries, The Lying Game is full of suspense as Emma tries to uncover where her twin sister could have gone while also trying to figure out why they were separated in the first place. Running for just two seasons, The Lying Game still managed to impress fans of the teen mystery genre, garnering a similar IMBd score to the long-running Pretty Little Liars, which is also based on Shepard’s novels.

3/10 Pretty Little Liars (2010-2017) – 7.4

Pretty Little Liars is largely credited with reviving the teen mystery genre for a new generation. The hit series centered on four estranged friends who reconnect when they begin receiving anonymous messages about their former queen bee’s disappearance and the various secrets they’d shared with her over the years.

When it comes to teen mystery series, Pretty Little Liars is arguably the queen bee of them since the series regularly introduced new red hearings and changed the identity of the true “A” several times over the show’s seven-season run. However, these winding and sometimes convoluted plots have drawn criticism from fans and TV critics.

2/10 13 Reasons Why (2017-2020) – 7.5

Watch On Netflix

Loosely based on the Jay Asher novel of the same name, 13 Reasons Why followed Clay and several of his classmates who were left a series of cassette tapes outlining the 13 reasons why Hannah Baker took her own life. The first season revolved heavily around what was on the tapes, while the subsequent seasons dealt with the varying aftermath and introduced new mysteries to the mix.

Though the series is one of Netflix’s most controversial due to its handling of the first season’s storyline, it did present an interesting mystery with several twists and turns. It also managed to introduce new mysteries every season, which kept the show fresh for fans as it wandered further from the source material.

1/10 Outer Banks (2020-) – 7.6

Outer Banks starts out as an ordinary teen drama series but threw everyone for a loop when it introduced an exciting adventure/mystery into the mix. The series centers on John B. and his ragtag group of friends who set out to find out what happened to his father and end up stumbling on the very treasure his father disappeared while trying to find.

This is the perfect show for fans who love mysteries because it’s ripe with them. There’s the mystery of where the treasure is hidden, the mystery of what the treasure is, the mystery of John B’s dad, and the mystery of why Ward Cameron is involved in the entire mess.
