Batgirl Movie Star & Directors Reportedly Discussing New Deals With WB

Batgirl star Leslie Grace and directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are reportedly discussing new deals with WB after the film’s cancellation.

Despite the film’s shocking cancellation, Batgirl star Leslie Grace and directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are reportedly discussing new deals with Warner Bros. Development on the DC Extended Universe film began in early 2017 when Joss Whedon, who was fresh off the heels of completing Justice League for the studio following Zack Snyder’s departure, was tapped to write, direct and produce the project, which was planned for an HBO Max release. Whedon would depart Batgirl after failing to determine its story, being replaced the following year by Birds of Prey scribe Christina Hodson, who impressed WB with her work on the Harley Quinn spinoff film and the yet-to-be-released Flash movie, and Bad Boys for Life directors Arbi and Fallah.

Casting on Batgirl began in mid-201 after Arbi and Fallah were confirmed as the film’s directors, with In the Heights breakout star Grace beating out a number of other young actors, including Isabela Merced, Zoey Deutch and Haley Lu Richardson. The roster would continue to grow with J.K. Simmons returning as Jim Gordon from Justice League, Michael Keaton continuing his Batman return from The Flash, Brendan Fraser set to play the villainous Firefly, Jacob Scipio, Ivory Aquino, Rebecca Front, Ethan Kai and Corey Johnson. Despite filming having concluded this past March, Batgirl found itself cancelled as WB shifted its plans for theatrical projects, but it may not be exclusively bad news for those involved with the film.

Shortly after news broke of it being scrapped, Deadline has brought word that Batgirl star Leslie Grace and directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are reportedly discussing new deals with Warner Bros. Sources indicate the studio is looking to continue working with the group given the sudden nature of the film’s cancellation, which reportedly stems from WB Discovery CEO David Zaslav seeking to move away from his predecessor’s efforts to boost HBO Max subscription numbers. Batgirl was reportedly 90 percent complete and was in the midst of test screenings when it was cancelled.

Leslie Grace Shares How She Felt Wearing Batgirl Suit For The First Time

While their new negotiations may not result in the film’s release, the fact that Batgirl star Leslie Grace and directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are reportedly discussing new deals with WB should come as a promising sign for those who were eager to see the Gotham heroine join the DCEU. Given the studio has frequently shifted its DCEU plans amidst poor reviews to their early films, actors’ departures and underwhelming box office performances, the door does still seem open for Batgirl to become part of the franchise in the future should the negotiations prove fruitful. That the studio is also open to new discussions with Grace and the Batgirl directors also further indicates that the film’s cancellation was not due to poor test screenings, as early reports indicated, but rather Zaslav’s goal to trim studio costs.

Though they have expressed their disappointment at the film’s cancellation, Batgirl directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah indicated in their response to the news that they were still hopeful the movie could see the light of day, seemingly pointing towards a willingness for the two to continue collaborating with Warner Bros. Grace’s response to the cancellation didn’t. address any possible future as the character, but with her various BTS teases indicating her having enjoyed her time as Batgirl and her hopes for other DCEU appearances, it does seem possible she too would be open to discussing new deals with the studio. For now, audiences will have to keep their fingers crossed that reports of the new negotiations prove to be true to allow Grace another chance to don the Batgirl cape and cowl.
