Did Star Wars Just Confirm Yoda’s Secret Jedi Apprentice?

[ad_1]

Warning: spoilers ahead for Star Wars: Yoda #1Of all the Jedi Masters throughout Star Wars, perhaps none has held as great of an influence as Yoda. The diminutive green Jedi Master is centuries old, and his incredible lifespan has been dedicated to the study and teaching of the very nature of the Force. While most of his lessons were imparted in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, Yoda may have taken on another apprentice on the fringes of the galaxy – one who survived beyond the Jedi Purge.

Yoda is, in many ways, the embodiment of what it means to be a Jedi. Beyond his powerful connection to the Force, the Jedi Master has long remained humbled by its will. It is Yoda’s most powerful ally and his closest friend, and when it calls, he listens. In service of the Force, there is no task beneath Yoda’s station, even leaving the lofty towers of the Jedi Temple to serve its will on a backwater world.

Star Wars: Yoda #1 from Cavan Scott and Nico Leon opens with Yoda as he’d live the final years of his life; in exile as a hermit on the swamp world of Dagobah. Surprisingly, another being reaches out to Yoda through the Force – the obvious conclusion being that it’s his only known apprentice in this period, Luke Skywalker. However, as Yoda holds a souvenir in his hand and his mind falls back to nearly a century past, before the Great Jedi Purge and the rise of the Empire, the answer becomes less clear. Yoda reminisces over “lessons” he taught long ago, he flashes back not to Luke, but to the distant Outer Rim world of Turrak. There, the native Scalvi were beset by marauders from the far more formidable Crulkon. The Scalvi called out to the Jedi for aid and, after deliberating what response (if any) the Jedi should provide, Master Yoda insisted on undertaking the mission personally. Was Yoda simply living by the Jedi code and reminding his fellow council members of the purpose the Jedi serve, or was the Force guiding him to a new apprentice?

Yoda’s Latest Mission Is Exposing an Untold Story

On Turrak, Yoda meets an adventurous youngster named Bree – the person who called for help from the Jedi. Later, in battle, Yoda prevents Bree killing one of the Scalvi, promising the young warrior they will learn from one another. While the story could make several twists and turns yet, Bree is an obvious candidate for Jedi status who Yoda has already taken an interest in, and solicitation info for future issues shows fans will soon see Yoda tutoring the next generation of Jedi – a detail which would allow the series to perfectly follow Bree’s Jedi training should Yoda take them under his wing.

A New Yoda Apprentice Would Be a Major Development In His Story

In an interesting parallel, this is similar to Qui-Gon Jinn discovering Anakin Skywalker on Tatooine. Despite his unparalleled natural affinity for the Force, Anakin Skywalker went unnoticed until happenstance brought Qui-Gon to the remote desert planet. Turrak is in a similar state: should a child there be born worthy of becoming a Jedi, it is likely the Order would remain ignorant of their existence unless the Force intervened and brought a Jedi to their world. And, like Anakin, it is possible some Jedi could view the child as too old to train at this point. Yoda’s journey may have led him to Turrak, and could even see him train a child who is disallowed from joining the Order. Such a Force-trained individual residing on the fringes of civilization would believably survive the Jedi purge, and be able to contact Yoda during his exile.

Whether they’re a true Jedi or not, it seems likely that Yoda’s time on Turrak will lead to him training a previously unknown individual in the ways of the Force. However, it’s clear that if Bree is Yoda‘s apprentice, they’re not operating as a Jedi by the time of the Star Wars original trilogy, suggesting there’s a tragic end to this unseen tale.
