Hal Jordan’s Secret Weakness Reveals His True Green Lantern Nemesis

[ad_1]

A glib mental note from Hal Jordan reveals a hidden fear for Green Lantern, which may make one of his classic enemies his ultimate nemesis.

It seems that Green Lantern Hal Jordan has a much better nemesis that fits the hero’s deep-seated fear. An admission from Jordan reveals one particular weakness that may imply one of his closest allies is destined to be the Lantern’s greatest enemy.

Like any other hero in the DC Universe, Green Lantern has a lot of enemies. On both Earth and throughout the galaxy, plenty of people have come for Hal Jordan in the past. But for all the Hector Hammonds and Black Hands of the world, no enemy of Jordan’s has gotten into his head as much as the former Green Lantern Sinestro has. Once Hal’s mentor, Sinestro had a fairly close bond with the Earthman, until Jordan helped expose Sinestro’s fascist rule on the planet Korugar. Since then, Sinestro has come into conflict with Hal numerous times, their battles all the more tragic knowing they were once friends.

That said, there may be another person in Hal’s life who might serve as the Green Lantern’s antagonist a bit better than his old teacher. In Green Lantern #23 by Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis, Hal and a team of Lanterns are trapped on Qward, the home base of the villainous Sinestro Corps. As the army continues tearing its way through the ranks of the Green Lanterns, Hal and his allies have their hands full with the bookkeeper of the Sinestro Corps, Lyssa Drak. Hal notes that Drak’s frightening appearance makes her seem like something out of a horror movie. The Lantern notes that horror movies never seemed anything more than laughable to him. However, romantic movies that get Hal thinking about full-time commitment like Love, Actually or My Best Friend’s Wedding scare the hell out of the hero.

Who would have thought that something like love and commitment would scare the ‘greatest’ Green Lantern Hal Jordan? Granted Jordan is something of a playboy in the DC Universe, so him being afraid of love stands to reason. With that in mind, it seems that the master of fear wouldn’t be that great of an achenemy for Green Lantern. But Jordan’s ex and the love-powered Star Sapphire, on the other hand? She would fit the role of Hal’s thematic opposite much better than the Lantern’s old mentor.

The Star Sapphires are like the Green Lanterns, except they operate off of love instead of willpower. Hal Jordan’s ally Carol Ferris has been close to Green Lantern as a romantic partner and at his throat as a supervillain. While Star Sapphire hasn’t been a villain in some time, the Star Sapphire Corps has occasionally challenged the Green Lanterns thanks to their guiding principle that “love conquers all”. A Star Sapphire that embraces that maxim and attempts to rein in Hal Jordan with that idea would be a challenge that could truly cut to the core of the hero. With Green Lantern being so emotionally distant, a love-powered antagonist could make for a truly engaging foe for him.
