Harry Potter: 10 Draco Malfoy Book Quotes That Shouldn’t Have Been Cut From The Movies

[ad_1]

Draco Malfoy is one of the most popular characters in the Harry Potter fandom. With his careless, bad-boy personality juxtaposed with being a good student, dutiful son, and (mostly) reformed bully, Draco has appealed to fans for years, especially as a fanfic character.

While Tom Felton’s portrayal of the tortured Slytherin has been applauded and adored, the film version of Draco Malfoy was missing a few more of his many layers. There are numerous Draco quotes from the books that further explain his character, many of which were unfortunately cut from the films.

“Don’t Try Anything, Or I’ll Kill You.”

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows

The Malfoy Manor scene in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 shows Wormtail going to fetch Griphook, however, in the book it is Draco who is tasked with getting the elf. While doing so, he threatens Harry, Ron, and the others.

By omitting this quote, the film puts Draco in a much more favorable light than in the book, taking away from his complexity as a reluctant Death Eater and Malfoy, and reducing him to the bad-boy-with-a-good-heart trope. Plus, cutting out this quote takes away from his moral conflict as he does his family’s bidding.

“He Should Snap His Wand In Half And Go Join Them.”

Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets

Draco’s early contempt for all things Muggle is no secret and this part of his personality from the books is depicted fairly accurately in the films. But there are still many quotes that prove Draco is the most evil character that weren’t included, such as this quote from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

While Draco’s attitude towards the Weasleys is still portrayed in the scene, the full quote shows just how menacing and condescending he is towards Arthur and his family. For Draco, Muggle-supporters are just as bad as Muggles themselves, and this sentiment is never shown as strongly in the films that vouch for his redemption.

“You’ll Go The Same Way As Your Parents.”

Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone

Draco Malfoy is not only shown to be an egoistic and discriminating pure-blood, but he is also unabashedly a bully. However, his bullying goes deeper than playground insults as he makes sure to hit others where it hurts, especially when it comes to Harry Potter.

During their second meeting, Draco warns Harry that he better be more polite otherwise he too will end up dead like his parents. Not only does this quote demonstrate how sinister Malfoy could be in his worst moments, but it also furthers the entitlement shown in the films, with him constantly demanding respect from those he sees as beneath him.

“You Want To Steal My Glory!”

Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is in many ways the start of a half-developed Draco redemption arc. Film viewers see the troubled Draco as he struggles to live up to the Dark Lord’s expectations and kill Dumbledore.

While crashing Slughorn’s party may not have been one of Draco’s best decisions in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, this quote afterward (directed at Snape) shows just how much this task means to Draco, and how much pressure he is truly under. It also shows a different side of him, one that needs to do this to prove something not only to the Death Eaters but to himself as well: that he is one of them. Plus, his banter with Severus emphasizes their father-son-like relationship that was so huge to his character.

“But They Were OUR Kind, Weren’t They?”

Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone

One of the things only book readers will know about Draco Malfoy is that he first meets Harry in Diagon Alley at Madam Malkin’s robe shop, not Hogwarts like the first film shows.

This is one of Draco’s very first quotes – establishing his prejudice right from the start. It also shows that he prioritizes blood status over manners and sensitivity, as he still asks this after learning that Harry’s parents are dead. This quote shows just how deep his pure-blood-supremacy indoctrination runs, something the films don’t display to the same extent.

“He’ll Kill My Whole Family!”

Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince

Draco’s actions in the sixth installment are driven by various motivations, but above all is survival. This is made clear in the film as well, except it cuts out the part where Draco fears for his entire family, not just himself.

While Draco is an antagonist in Harry’s life, he is not a purely evil villain; instead, he is a product of his environment and his actions upon Voldemort’s return are largely led by his loyalty to his family. The omission of this quote not only makes Draco seem more selfish than he really is but also erases what a dutiful son he is as he musters up the courage to murder in order to keep his family safe.

“When We Met On The Train, First Day At Hogwarts?”

Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire

Draco and Harry’s relationship on-screen is simplified a lot more than what is written in the books, and a lot of their interactions are deleted, such as when Malfoy comes to torture Harry further at the end of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire after he had just witnessed Cedric die and Voldemort return.

This quote (where he reminds Harry of what he said in their first year about choosing his friends wisely) not only highlights how relentless Draco could be when it comes to torturing Harry but also how much of his character revolves around their rivalry, an aspect that could have been better encompassed on screen via this quote.

“I Didn’t Know He Was Going To Come-“

Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince

Although Draco is merciless when it comes to those he deems unworthy of his company, he is still someone who cares about his friends, as evidenced by this quote from Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

When Dumbledore asks him why he would want Fenrir Greyback around his friends, Draco says he didn’t know he would be coming along, proving his care for his friends and how naive he is when it comes to the Death Eaters and their ways. While many book quotes further Draco’s darker personality traits, this one shows a softer and more caring side to him and should have been included in the film for that reason.

“Sure You Can Manage That Broom, Potter?”

Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban

Part of Draco Malfoy’s trademark persona is how uptight and rude he constantly is. However, there are many quotes that prove Draco isn’t all bad – he is also capable of normal conversations and does have less-spiteful moments with other characters in the books, something that isn’t really shown in the Harry Potter films.

This quote from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is a prime example of this side of Draco, as he gawks at Harry’s new Firebolt but doesn’t want to risk complimenting his broom. Not only does this quote show that Draco does in fact marvel at Harry’s belongings and is able to have normal, non-pure-blood promoting banter, but it would also have been a perfect inclusion for Drarry shippers.

“Dad And The Others Will Be Out In No Time…”

Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix

At the end of the day, Draco Malfoy is also just another young wizard learning to navigate the cruel world around him with what he is given. Unfortunately for him, that means being raised by a family of Death Eaters.

This quote from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix showcases just how young, alone, and vulnerable Draco is throughout the events following Voldemort’s return. The usage of “dad” instead of his typical utterance of “father” is especially telling to just how fragile Draco is, a side of him that should have been explored a bit more in the films as it adds to his complexity as a morally gray character.
