Harry Potter: 10 Personality Traits That Harry Shares With Lily

[ad_1]

Harry Potter fans will return to the Wizarding World on February 10, 2023, with the release of Hogwarts Legacy. While the video game will take players to the 19th century, Harry’s heroics take place a century later. And his journey wouldn’t have been possible without his mother.

Harry is said to look just like his father, but his inherent personality arguably lies closer to Lily’s. This ranges from the mother-son pair’s tendency to be empathetic to their incredible capacity to love. Taking a deeper look into Harry’s similarities to Lily will create a greater appreciation for the latter and how Harry became the person he was by inheriting Lily’s qualities.

Their Introverted Nature

Although Harry loved being around people who accepted him, he wasn’t the kind to engage in partying or big-time displays of bravado. Along the same lines, Lily was noted to be popular at school but never went out of her way to gain that image and had a dedicated group of friends.

Harry’s introverted nature also had to do with the treatment that the Dursleys subjected him to, but he also didn’t display the need to be around many people. Harry was more than happy to spend time with his core friend group and simply talk to them, which is what Lily preferred, as well.

Their Fascination For The Wizarding World

Since Harry and Lily were raised by Muggles, the two were absolutely fascinated with anything to do with the Wizarding World. Lily’s love for magic was seen in her first flashback sequence where she played with her powers in a field.

Harry’s fascination was explored in detail when he was awestruck upon entering Diagon Alley and found Ron to be an interesting person when they first met. Harry didn’t take living in the Wizarding World for granted because of how different it was from the Muggle world, and it’s clear Lily didn’t, as well, since she embraced being a witch straight away.

Their Ability To Put Up With People Who Treated Them Poorly

Lily wasn’t treated well by her mean sister and had to put up with Snape’s jealous attitude for years, as well. But she stuck by her sibling and best friend for quite a while despite their behavior, a sense of tolerance that Harry inherited since he was also done wrong by the same people.

Harry stomached the harsh way the Dursleys treated him for years without retaliation, while he also braved the bias that Snape had against him at school. Lily was subjected to slurs against Muggle-borns during school and Harry faced similar circumstances when he was deemed to be the Heir of Slytherin. Both mother and son proved they were capable of soldiering through such unfair times.

Their Dislike Of Power & Fame

By all accounts, Lily was said to have hated the Dark Arts and was never charmed by popular figures like James, whom she only started dating after he mellowed down. Harry was instantly famous upon entering the Wizarding World, but was always shown to be uncomfortable by it.

Harry never desired power either, best seen when he decided to return the Elder Wand to Albus Dumbledore’s grave rather than keep it with him. Harry inherited Lily’s inherent humility, which made him value peace and patience over power and popularity.

They Both Saw The Best In Others

There were quite a few characters no one should have trusted in Harry Potter, but the protagonist and his mother did so anyway. Lily stuck by Snape, even when he started to give in to his love for the Dark Arts, while Harry refused to break the trust he had in his friends.

As explained by Remus Lupin, Harry had the knack for looking for the best in people, just as Lily did. He took on the same optimistic and somewhat innocent viewpoint of the world as his mother and even gave Voldemort a chance to show remorse during their climactic clash in the hopes of finding some redeeming qualities in the Dark Lord.

They Both Had Empathy For All Kinds Of People

Among Harry Potter’s best traits was his never-ending kindness toward anyone he met. This quality is what made Dobby so loyal to Harry, as the latter instantly treated the house-elf like an equal when no other wizards had.

Lily’s kindness was also her defining factor, having been willing to forgive Petunia for the way she treated her and becoming the only friend the outcast Severus Snape had in his childhood. Harry didn’t have a mean bone in his body toward people who weren’t accepted by their peers, like Neville and Luna, with this kindness comparable to Lily’s.

They Both Stood Up For Their Friends

Lily is considered one of the best female characters in Harry Potter for being compassionate toward her friends. She was the only one who defended Snape from the Marauders’ bullying, which was a big deal considering James tormented him in broad daylight and nobody did anything.

Harry similarly stood up for the likes of Neville and Hermione against bullies like Malfoy. He was fierce in the defense of his friends, getting into duels with Malfoy for Hermione and Ron’s sake and leading the Death Eaters away from his group in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries.

Their Capacity To Love

Albus Dumbledore thought this was the trait that most closely associated Harry with Lily, claiming that the power of love he inherited from his mother lived in his very skin. Lily’s love for Harry protected him from Voldemort, which Harry then passed on to the participants of the Battle of Hogwarts.

Harry’s capacity for love is endless, making it his main defense against Voldemort which meant the Dark Lord couldn’t possess him as he tried at the Ministry of Magic. Those who experienced Lily’s love never forget how it felt, and it was Harry who reminded them of her.

Their Fiery Temper

For all their positive traits, Harry and Lily did have a temper that was difficult to match. Lily’s was shown at a young age when she got angry at Snape for accidentally harming her sister. She also displayed it against James for his bigheaded attitude and again to Snape when he insulted her.

Harry’s explosive temper could get the better of him, as well, as he was shown to verbally attack Ron and Hermione when he was under stress from the Ministry’s smear campaign. Harry’s anger could make him say things he regretted later, and the manner in which he conducted himself during those times was reminiscent of Lily’s behavior.

Their Courage Needed For Sacrifice

There were quite a few heroic sacrifices in Harry Potter, with the protagonist and Lily making the biggest ones. Lily sacrificed herself for Harry when Voldemort gave her a chance to step aside – the courage she displayed in this situation was emulated years later by her son.

Harry proved himself to be Lily’s child through and through when he willingly walked to his death in the Forbidden Forest, wanting to spare his friends from Voldemort’s wrath. It took an incredible feat of bravery to head to his own doom when he could’ve fled, which is what Lily had done for Harry’s sake.
