Harry Potter: 10 Ravenclaw Quotes That Perfectly Sum Up Their Personality

The time is nearly here for Harry Potter fans to choose their Hogwarts house and start playing the new video game, Hogwarts Legacy. The title has an expected holiday 2022 release, and Warner Bros. has advertised that players will be able to explore the castle, attend classes, and of course, access their own house dormitory.

This is a dream come true for many Potterheads, who have been imagining getting their own Hogwarts letter and trying on the Sorting Hat since they were 11. Of course, even without a magical hat to analyze their personality traits, a majority of fans have already deemed themselves a member of one of the four Hogwarts houses. For example, someone who values academia and philosophy would likely put themselves in Ravenclaw. After all, the characters that belonged to this house, like Luna Lovegood, Cho Chang, and Professor Flitwick, were deep thinkers, and their quotes from the Harry Potter books and movies prove it.

“Wit Beyond Measure Is Man’s Greatest Treasure.”

Rowena Ravenclaw

Rowena Ravenclaw was the founder of Ravenclaw house and was known to be extremely intelligent and beautiful. She did not care if students were pure-blood or of Muggle parentage; all that mattered to her was that the students she taught were eager to learn and willing to think long and hard about life’s biggest questions.

Her famous quote was repeated several times in the Harry Potter series and was even written on her statue in the Ravenclaw common room. Rowena valued the power of the mind so much that instead of a password, students needed to answer a riddle to reach their rooms.

“If You Have To Ask, You’ll Never Know. If You Know, You Need Only Ask.”

Helena Ravenclaw

Harry went through his entire education at Hogwarts without realizing the Ghost of Ravenclaw, the Grey Lady, was Helena Ravenclaw, Rowena’s daughter. She had been murdered by the Bloody Barron after stealing her mother’s diadem, which was supposed to grant the wearer increased intelligence. She had been clever enough to hide the valuable crown away but did not escape with her life.

When Harry asked her what had happened to the diadem in Deathly Hallows Part 2, she gave him a riddle to figure it out. Of course, she was referring to the Room of Requirement, which only those who know about it can access simply by asking it to appear. Sure, just telling him where the diadem was would have been easier, but as a Ravenclaw, a riddle was more her style.

Filius Flitwick

As many Ravenclaws should be, Filius Flitwick was a great teacher. He cared little about a student’s behavior (within reason) as long as they demonstrated some creative uses of magic. A great example of this is Fred and George, who were often a nuisance to teachers, but who also demonstrated genius-level talent when it came to magic.

During this quote, Flitwick had been trying to tell Harry that the time to search for Ravenclaw’s diadem was likely not during a siege, but the line still rang true. Flitwick’s statement first gave Harry the idea to seek out a ghost in the Deathly Hallows book and how he found the location of the final lost Horcrux.

“Ten Death Eaters Are On the Loose And There Aren’t Dementors Anywhere.”

Cho Chang

Due to her somewhat lessened role in the Harry Potter movies, it’s easy to forget that Cho Chang was a great fit for Ravenclaw house. Her relationship with Harry was doomed to fail, especially since she never had the chance to get over the murder of her previous boyfriend, but it can’t be denied that she was intelligent.

In Order of the Phoenix, a majority of the wizarding world were determined not to believe that Voldemort had indeed come back. No matter the evidence that things were steadily growing darker, they wouldn’t open their eyes. However, Cho saw things as they were. She could see that the Ministry was covering up the escape of the Death Eaters and that they were making no real effort to find them.

“Otherwise, You See, All Those Wizards Would Have Gone Blabbing.”

Gilderoy Lockhart

Gilderoy Lockhart, likely the richest Ravenclaw character in Harry Potter, is not typically thought of as being intelligent. He was so laughably incompetent that it seemed impossible that anyone could have ever believed his lies. Ultimately, it was easy to cheer as he was finally revealed to be a fraud.

However, if Lockhart was truly as dim as people make him out to be, he never would have been so successful at tricking the wizarding world. After all, con artists typically need to be extremely intelligent and understand how their victims think. Lockhart had thought out his scheme meticulously and ensured that no one around could prove that he had never achieved anything but writing some exciting books.

“Who Would Suspect Poor Stuttering Professor Quirrell?”

Quirinus Quirrell

Quirinius Quirrell became one of the most evil Ravenclaws in Harry Potter and is another temporary DADA teacher whose intelligence is often underestimated. In the Philosopher’s Stone book, Hagrid described Quirrell as a genius. The fact that he was the only person who could figure out where Voldemort was hiding and track him down proves this.

In addition, Quirrell successfully portrayed himself as a fearful man whom most people would never think to suspect. He made it clear in his quote to Harry that he had done this very deliberately, and in the case of the Boy Who Lived, it worked.

“I’d Try Putting It Under The Water If I Were You.”

Moaning Myrtle

Moaning Myrtle is seen mainly as a nuisance in the Harry Potter series. Even before she died, she was considered sensitive and annoying by her peers. She was bullied relentlessly, and it took several hours before anyone even realized she was dead. However, Myrtle was far wittier than anyone thought.

When Harry went into the prefects’ bathroom to try to figure out his Triwizard clue, Myrtle was the one who had told him to open it under the water. Of course, she had seen Cedric Diggory do this already, but she made it sound as if it had been frustrating for her to watch him, stating that it took him “ages.” Like a true Harry Potter Ravenclaw, she had already sorted the clue out.

“I Think the Answer Is That A Circle Has No Beginning.”

Luna Lovegood

Harry Potter fans are often surprised when they remember that Luna Lovegood was a Ravenclaw. After all, she believed in so many nonsensical things that it was difficult to think of her as an academic. However, most of these things her father taught her, and she couldn’t be blamed for believing them.

Even so, these beliefs revealed a curiosity in Luna that led her to think deeply about the world around her. She never took anything at face value and was incredibly fascinated by the thoughts and feelings of others. If that wasn’t enough, Luna’s ease at solving the “circle” riddle in Deathly Hallows proves that she has the mind of a Ravenclaw but the bravery of a Gryffindor.

“I Remember Every Wand I’ve Ever Sold, Mr. Potter.”

Garrick Ollivander

When Harry first met Mr. Ollivander, he wasn’t sure if he liked him. The man’s eccentric personality and deep interest in magic, whether it be light or dark, made the Boy Wizard uncomfortable. However, it was precisely this quality that made Ollivander a perfect example of a Ravenclaw.

Not only did Ollivander have a deep passion for learning the mysterious ways of wand lore, but he could remember every detail about a person’s wand just by seeing them. The wood type, core, length, and bendability for hundreds of wands were perfectly stored in his mind, and he proved it time and time again.
