James Gunn celebrates The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special earning a Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes by sharing a snap of his trophy.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special creator James Gunn shares a picture of its Certified Fresh trophy from Rotten Tomatoes. The entertainment review aggregator site, while not a perfect indicator of quality, is a useful tool for analyzing both critic and audience reactions to movies and television series. To achieve a Certified Fresh rating from the website, a piece of media must meet a few qualifications, including at least a 75% Tomatometer score (meaning that 75% of critics gave a positive review) and a minimum of five reviews from the site’s Top Critics.

In an impressive feat, twenty-five of the thirty Marvel Cinematic Universe films currently out have achieved the Certified Fresh distinction, along with nearly all the MCU’s recent Disney+ releases. The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which was released November 25 on Disney+, managed to keep the streak going, garnering one the MCU’s highest Rotten Tomatoes critic scores with a 93%, which only five MCU movies and one Disney+ release (Ms. Marvel) have achieved at the time of writing. Gunn celebrated the special’s distinction by sharing a snap of his trophy from the review site via Twitter. See the post below:

Why The GOTG Holiday Special Was A Hit

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special struck a chord with viewers by relying on the heart of the beloved superhero team and offering a light, seasonal romp while still advancing and developing the characters. The special’s comedic moments, hilariously bizarre premise involving Kevin Bacon, and visual spectacle would have made it a successful interstitial addition between Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 without including any major revelations or plot events. However, the addition of Mantis’ (Pom Klementieff) admission to Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) about their shared heritage elevated the project to another level by changing what viewers thought they knew about the Guardians team and setting up an even deeper bond between the characters heading into the trilogy’s final installment.

Will James Gunn Helm Another MCU Project After GOTG 3?

Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3 is currently set to be Gunn’s final foray into the MCU, with the marketing for the film driving home its status as the trilogy finisher and final ride for the team. Gunn has previously stated that he mainly returned to the MCU for the third installment in order to finish Rocket Raccoon’s (Bradley Cooper) storyline due to the filmmaker feeling particularly connected to that character. Since Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 completes the story he originally set out to tell about the team, the director’s comments about the third Guardians film indicate that it will serve as his farewell to those characters, though the Guardians may remain in the MCU beyond Gunn’s departure from the franchise.

In terms of other MCU projects, it’s unlikely that Gunn will take on another film or television series for Marvel any time soon given his recent hiring as the co-CEO and co-chair of DC Studios. Despite the amicable relationship between Marvel head Kevin Feige and his new competitor Gunn, the filmmaker’s position effectively shuts down the possibility of a new MCU project from Gunn since his focus will be elsewhere. While fans of the director have Gunn’s new DC slate, which reportedly includes a Superman project without Henry Cavill in the lead role, to look forward to, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will serve as his last MCU-related works for the foreseeable future.
