Last Chance U: Here’s What Happened To Coach Jason Brown After His Resignation

[ad_1]

Despite the controversies revealed about the brash football coach in Last Chance U, Jason Brown’s net worth, and more importantly, his career after the docuseries, remain unknown to many viewers. Beginning in Last Chance U season 3, Brown’s stint in Independence Community College, a rural school in Kansas, became the focus of the Netflix sports docuseries. As the case with the first two installments, Last Chance U focused on a junior college (JUCO) football program that served as the literal “last chance” for young men to make it in the sport. Thanks to the show’s recipe of bringing together great coaches with promising athletes, it’s not uncommon for players featured in Last Chance U to get signed into NFL teams. When viewers met the Indy Pirates, they were also introduced to Brown and his personal style of coaching.

The Netflix football series Last Chance U revealed that Brown was a Compton native who had a troubled childhood. He found refuge through football, spending some time in the NFL and the Arena Football League before focusing on coaching. Brown initially coached at Compton City College before eventually landing at Independence Community College as the head coach of the Indy Pirates, a team that didn’t have a winning record in a decade – up until the 2016 season. Following in the steps of fictional, reality-based, and inspirational football dramas like Friday Night Lights, Wildcats, and The Longest Yard, Last Chance U season 3 takes it to the next level by telling a true underdog story. During Indy’s 2017 season in Last Chance U season 3, Brown led the team to a program-best 9-2 record and the school’s first bowl game win. Unfortunately, Coach Jason Brown soon found himself at the center of a controversy, and as a result, his tenure as Independence Community College’s head football coach ended.

What Happened To Coach Jason Brown – Controversy Explained

The Pirates’ 2018 season didn’t go as smoothly for Coach Brown or the entire program. Whereas Jason Brown’s tough demeanor seemed to work in Last Chance U season 3, there was an issue when it came to the respect between the coach and his players. For various reasons, the team never came together as a unit, and the Pirates wound up going 2-8. Some players on the team, such as linebacker Bobby Bruce, were kicked off the team after disciplinary infractions. Moreover, following the Indy Pirates’ historic winning streak in 2016, Brown struggled with his newfound celebrity status, which contributed to the complications faced by his players.

Aside from athletes being kicked off of the team, Coach Brown found himself in trouble after the 2018 season came to a close. It was revealed Coach Brown sent a problematic text to German freshman player Alexandros Alexiou, saying that he would be the “new Hitler” in the young man’s life. Alexiou reported the messages to the ICC board. The publicized interaction resulted in backlash, causing Brown to resign from his position so that Indy could cut ties. Other Indy players, like quarterback Malik Henry, moved to other schools to continue their football careers. This wasn’t the end of the difficulties for Brown, who later found himself in legal hot water.

Following his conclusion at Indy, Coach Brown received eight felony charges related to blackmail and identity theft in 2019, as well as two misdemeanor charges of false communication. According to Bleacher Report, the former coach posed as a lawyer from the Cochran Law Firm in California and wrote cease-and-desist letters to various news outlets, so they would stop reporting on his interaction with the German player as well as his treatment of former players. Following the indictment, Coach Brown maintained his innocence and continued to move on with his life. The extent of the fallout wasn’t seen in the docuseries since Last Chance U moved to Laney College for season 5. In 2021, all charges against Coach Brown were dismissed with prejudice, meaning that they can’t be brought up again. Coach Brown described the dismissal as vindicating and thanked his lawyers afterward.

Without coaching to focus on, the Last Chance U’s Coach Brown started his own whiskey and cigar brand, which he actively promotes on his social media accounts. He also released his own book titled “Hate Me Now, Love Me Later,” which details his journey as a player and a coach. Despite not actively coaching, Brown is still active in the football community by offering classes to players and fellow coaches. In May 2021, he appeared on the popular podcast The Pat McAfee show to share his side of the story and describe what he felt were misrepresentations in Last Chance U seasons 3 and 4. The Last Chance U series has moved to basketball, so it seems unlikely the series will address Coach Brown’s story again. Brown has mentioned wanting to continue to help guide young men through college, but so far, no school has brought him in after his divisive appearances in Last Chance U seasons 3 and 4.

What Is Last Chance U’s Jason Brown’s Net Worth?

Jason Brown’s exact net worth is unclear, although most recent estimates point to Brown being worth around $800,000. This is based on several factors, including the $76,000 that Coach Brown earned annually for his duties in Last Chance U until the end of 2018. Brown also runs a successful online store that sells his book, his whiskey and shirts, hats, and other merchandise that promote his main products. Although “Hate Me Now, Love Me Later” is not a monumental bestselling book, it has earned hundreds of positive reviews on Amazon. In short, while there’s not much public information regarding how much money Jason Brown has actually made, it’s safe to say that the former Last Chance U coach is worth around a million dollars. That net worth is likely similar for other Last Chance U coaches who have developed similar deals as well.

How Does Last Chance U: Basketball’s Coach Mosley Compare To Jason Brown?

A blended image features Coach Mosley and the basketball team in Last Chance U Basketball

Last Chance U: Basketball is the 2021 spin-off series focused on the East Los Angeles College Huskies as led by coach John Mosley, whose strengths in terms of both coaching and onscreen presence are comparable to Jason Brown. Similar to how Brown elevated the Indy Pirates, Mosley transformed the once failing ELAC Huskies into the number 2 ranked junior college team in the state, ending the 2019 to 2020 season with an impressive record of 29-1. However, unlike Brown, Mosley wasn’t forced to resign, nor did he rack up several felony charges. In fact, Mosley was seen again in Last Chance U: Basketball season 2, which was released in late 2022.

Last Chance U ‘s Mosley isn’t as comically outrageous as the iconic Jason Brown. But Mosley carries himself with the same level of confidence and employs equally effective methods for motivating and teaching his team. It’s difficult to compare the two in terms of points/statistics, as football and basketball are very different team sports. However, while the fate of Brown’s Pirates is a mixed bag, Mosley’s Huskies seem to have nowhere to go but up. Compared to Jason Brown, John Mosley is much less likely to let his team down in the long term.
