Man Of Steel: Why Cavill’s Superman Costume Doesn’t Include Red Underwear

[ad_1]

In the DCEU, Henry Cavill’s Superman suit is missing its iconic red underwear, referencing an era of the comics and having an in-universe explanation.

The DCEU franchise began with 2013’s Man of Steel, a Superman solo film that brought the Last Son of Krypton into the modern era – though it didn’t include the Superman costume’s famous red underwear, to the surprise of some. Superman’s famous (if not occasionally mocked) red trunks have been a part of his iconic outfit since his 1938 debut in Action Comics, yet they were noticeably absent in the 2013 movie for both aesthetic reasons and to tie into the comics at the time. The film does provide a suitable in-universe substitute for the missing red trunks, however.

Superman’s costume, with its bright colors, cape, and trunks, is based on outfits worn by circus strongmen. In the 1930s, circus performers were the ideal visual signifier of strength and athleticism, so Superman’s outfit was a fitting and overt way of indicating his incredible strength. Various types of circus performers’ outfits inspired the majority of superhero costumes since then.

Following the DC Comics crossover Flashpoint story arc in 2011, which rebooted DC’s continuity, Superman and the rest of DC’s pantheon was reimagined in the New 52 lineup, and Superman’s outfit no longer included its famous trunks. Man of Steel’s director, Zack Snyder, wished to include Superman’s red underwear in Henry Cavill’s suit, but ultimately stuck with a New 52-inspired outfit, feeling that it matched the look and feel of his film better. While Superman’s trunks eventually returned to the comics, they’re still missing from the DCEU, though the film universe compensates for its lack of red underwear by making Superman’s entire suit underwear by technicality.

The Inspiration For Man Of Steel’s Superman Costume Explained

Henry Cavill as Superman in Man of Steel

When reimagining the aesthetics of Krypton in Man of Steel, the filmmakers took inspiration from Medieval garbs. Kryptonian skinsuits had a chainmail-like appearance, and their chest logos represented their wearer’s House, with a sigil-like glyph on their chests. For Superman, his famous “S” logo represents the House of El, whose symbol represents hope.

Kryptonian skinsuits are shown being worn underneath other articles of clothing, such as robes, spacesuits, and battle armor. In a way, this makes up Superman’s lack of the iconic red underwear because his suit, by a certain definition, is an undergarment. Given his powers, Superman doesn’t need armor or a spacesuit, so he simply wears his skinsuit as both a representation of his Kryptonian heritage and a way to separate his two identities.

While Superman eschewed his iconic briefs in DC’s New 52 comics (and eventually regained them in 2018) the DCEU’s Kal-El continues to wear his seemingly trunks-free suit throughout the franchise. Zack Snyder’s Justice League saw the rebirth of Superman and his temporary use of a regenerative black suit. In subsequent appearances, Superman has returned to the classic blue outfit from Man of Steel, which, while missing the iconic red underwear, still proves to be an aesthetically-pleasing superhero suit that makes sense in the context of the DCEU’s Krypton.
