Netflix: Best New TV Shows & Movies This Weekend (December 2)

This weekend, Netflix is adding the first part of the second season of a drama TV series, a drama movie based on a novel, a new version of a classic Christmas tale, and a documentary about a filmmaker. Last weekend, Netflix welcomed season 4 of LEGO: City Adventures, the stop-motion animated movie The Boxtrolls, the sports drama movie Southpaw, the mystery thriller The Vanishing, and Tyler Perry’s Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor, along with the Christmas movie Christmas on Mistletoe Farm, the fantasy horror TV series Wednesday, and the rom-com Christmas movie The Noel Diary.

As it does on the first days of every month, Netflix will add a long list of licensed content this weekend, most notably the buddy cop comedy 21 Jump Street, the drama movie Hachi: A Dog’s Tale, the coming-of-age drama My Girl, the epic historical war movie Troy, and David Leitch’s Bullet Train. As for original content, the streaming giant will welcome the first episodes of the second season of Firefly Lane, a drama movie based on a famous novel, a new version of Charles Dickens’ classic Christmas tale, and a documentary about the life and career of Robert Downey Sr. Here are the best movies and TV shows coming to Netflix this weekend – December 2.

Firefly Lane – season 2, part 1

Part 1 of the second season of the drama TV series Firefly Lane is now available to stream. This season, Kate (Sarah Clarke) struggles with the painful aftermath of Johnny’s ill-fated trip to Iraq, while Tully (Katherine Heigl) faces a lawsuit after walking away from her talk show, so she must start her career all over again. This leads Tully to search for answers about who she is and where she comes from, including a quest to find the father she never met. In the 1980s, Kate and Johnny fall in love, creating drama in the newsroom where they work, as Tully’s career rises and she flirts with cocky sportscaster Danny Diaz (Ignacio Serricchio). In the 1970s, teenage Kate and Tully struggle to keep their friendship together as Tully’s mother, Cloud, goes to jail for dealing drugs and Tully goes to live with her grandmother, far away from Firefly Lane.

Lady Chatterley’s Lover is a romantic drama movie directed by Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre and based on the novel of the same name by D.H. Lawrence. It’s the story of Connie (Emma Corrin), who after marrying Sir Clifford Chatterley (Matthew Duckett), takes the title of Lady Chatterley and her life of wealth and privilege seems set. However, this idealistic union begins to turn into incarceration when Clifford returns from the First World War, and due to his injuries, is now unable to walk. Lady Chatterley then meets and falls for the gamekeeper on the Chatterley family estate, Oliver Mellors (Jack O’Connell), and this secret affair leads her to a sensual sexual awakening. Lady Chatterley then must make a decision: follow her heart or return to her husband and do what Edwardian society expects of her.

Scrooge: A Christmas Carol

This week’s dose of Christmas content comes in the shape of the animated movie Scrooge: A Christmas Carol, a new version of Charles Dickens’ classic tale. With his very soul on the line, Scrooge (voiced by Luke Evans) has but one Christmas Eve left to face his past and build a better future. Also part of the voice cast of Scrooge: A Christmas Carol are Olivia Colman, Jessie Buckley, Johnny Flynn, and Jonathan Pryce.

Netflix’s catalog of documentaries keeps expanding, and among its latest additions is “Sr.”. Directed by Chris Smith and produced by Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey, “Sr.” is a portrait of the life, career, and last days of maverick filmmaker Robert Downey Sr., whose rebellious spirit infused decades of counterculture movie-making. Shot over the course of three years, “Sr.” takes a look into Downey’s art and the life with which it was deeply intertwined, including an intimate examination of his relationship with son Robert Downey, Jr., as well as capturing his decision to embark on his own concurrent and final film project.
