Pokémon BDSP Streamer Has Unlikely Double Shiny Encounter To Start Game

A streamer playing Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl has caught a rare double Shiny encounter with starters, beating incredible odds.

A Twitch streamer playing Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl has beaten the odds while Shiny hunting, encountering a double Shiny appearance at the start of the game. Shiny hunting in Pokémon games has now become a key part of the series, despite being present since Generation 2 with Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal. These rare, alternately colored variations of typical Pokémon are a big focus point for numerous online streamers playing Pokémon games for audiences.

Finding a Shiny Pokémon is not easy for most players. With base Shiny encounter odds set at a potential 1 in every 4096, stumbling across a wild encounter without the use of a Shiny Charm or chaining is considered one of the most unlikely means of finding a Shiny. However, for those hoping to make their journey through a region with a Shiny Pokémon starter, this is the only way to obtain one. Players may have to reset their games thousands of times to find that rare, alternate variation, which is both time-consuming and frustrating. Despite this, Shiny hunting has only grown in popularity thanks to streaming platforms like Twitch.

According to Dexerto, Twitch streamer MitchOG hit the Shiny jackpot when hunting for a Shiny starter Pokémon during a stream on his channel. Three and a half hours into the stream, MitchOG not only encountered the Shiny Grass-type starter Turtwig, but the wild Starly he was battling also appeared Shiny. The odds of both the starter picked and the opponent Pokémon appearing Shiny in the same battle is almost impossibly high, and the creator shared his success to his MitchOG YouTube channel. Viewer Reversalx7 on Reddit did the math and stated:

“Context: The reason this is absolutely insane is that this happened with a 1.5-minute cutscene encounter. Finding a Pokémon that is a Shiny (different color+sparkles) = 1:4096 so 4096*4096 = 1:16.7 Million.”

While exciting, this Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl encounter does have its setbacks. Unfortunately, the Shiny Starly is one of the locked encounters that prevent players from capturing the rare variation. Like Wally’s Ralts in Ruby and Sapphire, and Purloin from the catching tutorial in Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, these Pokémon at the beginning of the games have every chance to appear Shiny, but will never be able to join player teams. Despite this, having the chance to find and stream one of the rare, uncatchable encounters not only gives players a story to tell, but also offers the audience of the stream extra excitement during the tedium of Shiny hunting.

While catching Shiny Pokémon at the start of the game can be a grind, games like Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl offer players ways to boost their chances of encountering Shiny species later in the narrative. By collecting the Shiny Charm after catching one of every species in the National Pokédex, the potential odd for a Shiny encounter increase to 1 in every 1365. These odds can be further improved by Pokémon‘s Shiny chaining, or encountering and knocking out the same Pokémon without engaging a different species. While these improved odds still don’t guarantee a Shiny encounter in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, they can greatly shorten the grind, adding to the number of Shiny companions on a player’s team.
