Spider-Man Fights Unmasked Green Goblin In New No Way Home Trailer

In a new villains-focused trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home, Tom Holland’s titular hero faces off against an unmasked version of Green Goblin.

A new Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer shows the titular hero fighting an unmasked Green Goblin. The upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film is the third to feature Tom Holland as the popular superhero, capping a trilogy of movies from director Jon Watts. Spider-Man: No Way Home is scheduled to hit theaters worldwide on December 17.

No Way Home has evolved to be the most anticipated Marvel movie since Avengers: Endgame, thanks in large part to its creative deployment of the multiverse storytelling device. In this film, a Doctor Strange-spell-gone-wrong allows a number of villains from Sony’s two previous Spider-Man franchises to come crashing into the MCU, resulting in the return of several fan-favorite actors after years away from their roles. The furthest reach into the past is Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, who made his debut in Sam Raimi’s first Spider-Man all the way back in 2002.

Early images have shown that Dafoe’s character is getting a redesign in No Way Home, and this latest Spider-Man trailer includes new footage of Peter Parker fighting a maskless Goblin. The video features some of the returning villain actors discussing their characters, and Dafoe states that his Norman Osborne believes that power is ultimately all that matters. And the Goblin has plenty of it, as shown by the pumpkin bomb he casually tosses at his friendly neighborhood foe. Check out the video below:

While Dafoe’s Green Goblin mask proved somewhat controversial with fans back in 2002, other No Way Home promotional material has indicated it does feature in at least some of the film. Jamie Foxx’s Electro, meanwhile, has been significantly changed from his blue-skinned appearance in 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which the studio had to promise to undo to coax Foxx back. The character’s new electrical rig, which seems to make use of Tony Stark’s arc reactor technology, has so far gotten the thumbs-up from fans.

However fans feel about the new-look Goblin, choosing to give Dafoe’s face more screen time is never a bad decision, and viewers of the 2002 Spider-Man will surely remember his maniacal grin when portraying Norman’s split personality. He will certainly prove a particularly dangerous adversary for Holland’s hero – and, with the others ganging up on him, perhaps too much for him to take on alone. Speculation that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will reprise their roles as Spider-Man in No Way Home to help him remains fervent, but the studio seems determined to stay quiet.
