Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Voice Actor Hopes to Explore A Darker Cal

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order voice actor Cameron Monaghan discusses his hopes to explore a darker path for Cal Kestis in the upcoming sequel.

Cameron Monaghan recently opened up about his role as Cal Kestis in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, including his hopes for a darker path for the character in the upcoming sequel. Monaghan entered the Star Wars universe as a Jedi padawan-turned-outcast tasked with trying to locate the remnants of the Jedi in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Developed by Respawn Entertainment and released to a warm reception in 2019, Fallen Order mixes Metroid-style exploration with lightsaber combat and Force powers to explore a tale set during the dark period of Imperial rule between the Prequel and Classic trilogies.

As one would expect for a Jedi living in this troubling era of the Star Wars timeline, Cal Kestis has lived a difficult life. At a young age, he was forced to watch his Jedi Master die at the hands of his own Clone Trooper unit as part of the infamous Order 66, a moment that still haunts him as he attempts to live out a quiet existence as a salvage collector on the planet Bracca. Even as he finds a new home and purpose for himself onboard the Stinger Mantis, he’s still being hunted by the Empire and their powerful Dark Side-wielding Inquisitors as he travels the galaxy in search of lost Jedi artifacts. At the end of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Cal even finds himself in a terrifying confrontation with Darth Vader, one he barely escapes from with his life. All of these events would surely take a toll on a former Jedi hopeful who’s already been hardened by war, and Cal’s voice actor thinks that this could be explored in Fallen Order’s sequel.

In a recent sit-down with CBR, Cameron Monaghan discussed what he enjoyed most about Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and his role as Cal Kestis, namely Cal’s grounded nature amid the fantastical Star Wars galaxy and the game’s theme of overcoming trauma and loss. He would like to see this topic explored further in a Fallen Order sequel, saying that he would “like to see us continue to explore Cal, and also put him in very different situations, and see how he changes as he gets older, as he ages throughout a very dark period.”

It’s been hinted that Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2 might have a new name entirely and that it could make its first appearance during this year’s Star Wars Celebration event. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order received rave reviews from Star Wars fans when it first launched, a rare feat for a title from EA’s divisive run of Star Wars games. EA wasted no time in announcing not only a sequel but hope for an entire series of Fallen Order titles that will likely continue Cal’s journey. While details about this next game are still scarce, recent rumors have suggested that developer Respawn might be getting ready to reveal it sooner rather than later.

Star Wars protagonists have often confronted the darkness within themselves, whether it be Anakin Skywalker falling to the Dark Side in the Prequel Trilogy, his son Luke nearly giving into his anger against Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine at the end of Return Of The Jedi, or Rey facing a nightmare version of herself in The Rise Of Skywalker. If Cameron Monaghan gets his wish, Cal Kestis could face a similar struggle in the upcoming Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order sequel.
