A comedy from Chris Rock, Top Five follows comedian Andre Allen and the journalist profiling him as they make their way around New York City as Andre tries to return to his comedy roots. In the film, Gabrielle Union plays Andre’s materialistic and image-concerned reality tv star fiancée, Erica Long.

A smart satire of the entertainment industry, namely the comedy world, Top Five has been praised for its funny and sharp writing that made Chris Rock the behemoth of American comedy that he has been and is today.

9/10 The Birth of a Nation (2016) – 6.5

The Birth of a Nation is a movie based on the true story of Nat Turner, an enslaved man who led a slave rebellion in 1800s Virginia. Gabrielle Union plays Esther, a slave who inspires the revolution led by the film version of Turner.

While the film garnered some controversy, it has also been praised. The acting of the film is exceptional, with Aja Naomi King, Jackie Earle Haley, Aunjanue Ellis, Colman Domingo, Penelope Ann Miller, and of course, Gabrielle Union offering fantastic performances.

8/10 Think Like a Man (2012) – 6.5

Think Like a Man looks at a group of friends who have had their lives affected for better and worse by Steve Harvey’s best-selling relationship advice book for women called Think Like a Man. Union plays Kristen, who struggles to get her commitment-phobic long-term boyfriend to pop the question.

The gifted cast does a great job of bringing the material to life, showing full commitment to the material. The success of this film guaranteed a sequel, with the cast reprising their roles in Think Like a Man Too in 2014.

7/10 The Public (2018) – 6.6

The homeless of Cincinnati take over the public library to seek shelter from the cold after an act of civil disobedience triggers a stand-off with the police in The Public. Playing Rebecca Porter, Union’s character is a reporter in this ensemble drama.

The Public has been noted as being an earnest portrayal of the importance of civil disobedience. Likewise, this movie from Brat Packer Emilio Estevez has been regarded as engaging and a social advocacy drama worthy of a watch.

6/10 Bad Boys II (2003) – 6.6

Made by director Michael Bay, Bad Boys II takes place eight years after the original, where Marcus and Mike must investigate the ecstasy influx in Florida from a Cuban cartel. As DEA Special Agent Syd Burnett, Union is an integral character in the story as she works with the guys as well as being Marcus’s little sister and secretly dating Mike.

While the film was a critical flop, positive reviews remarked that the film was fun with well-done special effects and action sequences.

5/10 Neo Ned (2005) – 6.9

An extremely polarizing film that has had its tone and subject matter criticized, Neo Ned is about the unlikely relationship that is formed in a mental institution between a skinhead and a black woman who believes she is the reincarnation of Hitler.

Favorable reviews of the film complemented that Neo Ned stayed away from being preachy or pretentious. However, Union herself has made clear that she was not fond of this performance of hers on Twitter, as stated in The Stranger.

4/10 Cadillac Records (2008) – 7.0

In Cadillac Records, the life of Chess Records founder Leonard Chess and its renowned musical artists are chronicled. Union portrays Geneva Wade, the wife of famous blue pioneer and Chess Records’ artist Muddy Waters. Unsurprisingly, the music of this film was deemed a highlight, with such classics as “At Last” by Etta James being sung by Beyoncé.

The performances of Cadillac Records are also noteworthy, with a talented cast consisting of Union’s great portrayal in addition to Academy Award winner Adrien Brody, Jeffrey Wright, and Mos Def, among many others.

3/10 The Inspection (2022) – 7.1

A story about a young, gay black man who, after being rejected by his mother and feeling limited options for his future, joins the Marines in The Inspection. Based on his actual life story, the director Elegance Braddock shows the reality of deep-seated prejudice and harsh basic training in conjunction with the camaraderie and support found in his new community.

Union plays Inez French, the main character’s mother. The movie offers a view of the complicated reality of the protagonist, avoiding any simplistic views of its characters.

2/10 Love & Basketball (2000) – 7.2

Playing Shawnee, Quincy’s high school love interest and date to the school dance, Union acts in this cult classic film. Love & Basketball shows the ups and downs of Monica and Quincy from childhood to their adult years as they navigate love and basketball with one another.

The well-done directing allows for the multi-dimensional, insightful portrayal of its characters. Also, Love & Basketball has been hailed for its portrayal of women’s sports and the use of the female perspective in the film’s narrative.

A high school twist on Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew, 10 Things I Hate About You follows a group of high schoolers who scheme to get around Bianca’s strict father’s rules by setting up her ill-tempered older sister with the school’s bad boy.

As Chastity Church, Bianca’s best friend, Union’s character is part of the ensemble cast that also includes Joseph Gordon Levitt and Heath Ledger. A staple of the teen film genre, 10 Things I Hate About You’s fantastic script and exemplary acting have helped to make this movie a fan favorite.
