From the creators of the acclaimed series Dark came the much-anticipated 1899, a drama mystery with a touch of sci-fi miniseries that became available on Netflix recently. The story follows a group of people traveling to America on a boat, each one with a hidden background, only for the events to unravel when the ship answers a call for help from another ship seemingly adrift.
Aside from the excellent acting by a diverse cast, the mysterious events keep viewers on their toes and embarks them on a journey of riddles, human behavior and the unconscious mind. And with a beautifully written script came many memorable quotes by the different characters on-screen.
“Things Will Turn Out Ok In The End, Meaning The End Won’t Be Here Till It’s Ok”
Ling Yi And Yuk Je – Season 1, Episode 1
Ling Yi and Yuk Je start the episode seemingly as lady and her handmaid. However, as time goes on, it is later discovered that Yuk Je is Ling Yi’s mother, and the pretense goes further as Ling Yi is pretending to be her friend (whose place she took on the boat to escape to the US).
The quote stands out because some fans might be able to recall John Lennon’s iconic phrase “if it’s not ok, it’s not the end.” It also speaks to almost anyone watching the series, as it provides hope that even though things don’t turn out the way they expect, there’s always time to make things right again.
“They Show You The World And Then They Tell You You Can’t Have It”
Virginia Wilson – Season 1, Episode 1
Classed as one of 1899’s most intelligent characters, Virginia Wilson appears to be a Madam traveling onboard the Kereberos with her latest courtesan. Somewhat antagonistic at first, she seems to say what’s on her mind and never shies away from the truth.
This is how she subtly calls out Maura Franklin’s profession as a woman doctor, who couldn’t really practice. Back in 1899, there were limited opportunities for women in the medical career as it was seen to be a field dominated by men. Even though today’s world has evolved, it still feels like the quote applies to women in the workplace still struggling for professional equality.
“There’s A Whole World Hidden Inside Each One Of Us Which Only Needs To Be Deciphered”
Maura Franklin – Season 1, Episode 1
Maura Franklin is the daughter of a man who seems to be obsessed with the human mind and the study of human behavior. Throughout the series, she talks about the brain and everything that is connected to it and within it.
Indeed, as many other movies, psychological studies, and therapists would concur, each human mind is a different and complex world. With today’s advances in the field of psychology, how the human mind functions is something many people are always trying to find answers to (which explains the rise in seeking self-discovery and self-growth through therapy).
“We All Wear Masks. We All Pretend”
Ángel – Season 1, Episode 3
While appearing to travel with his priest brother, Ángel portrays an upper-class gentleman, who is somewhat crude and pretentious. Diving deeper into the story, it turns out Ramiro is not his brother, but actually his lover.
While it’s clear that Ángel may be talking about how he has to hide his sexuality and his relationship due to the law, some viewers are also able to relate to the quote as well since there are many people in the world who aren’t able to live their true selves and have to, unfortunately, hide behind pretenses.
“Things Never Work Out The Way You Imagine They Will”
Lucien – Season 1, Episode 3
Perfect honeymooners at first, Lucien and Clemence, as every other passenger on the boat, have a completely different story hidden behind their love masks. In fact, he is as much a respected lieutenant as she is in love with him.
When Clemence sheepishly asks her husband if he ever loved her, in a tirade he tells her about everything he ever wanted in life, yet once he got it, it would soon slip away as he was incurably sick. The quote goes deep and speaks to everyone who plan their lives a certain way, and forget that life happens differently, and sometimes different may be best.

Henry Simpleton Season1, Episode 7
Dubbed one of the best Netflix shows of November, 1899 surprises the viewer with the discovery that the whole boat experience is part of a created simulation that keeps repeating itself. Henry Simpleton is then introduced as Maura’s father and at first, apparent creator of the simulation.
He explains to his grandson why everyone keeps failing the experiment, and how they all heavily rely on their emotions rather than their logic. The quote brings up the eternal “heart versus head” debate, where some follow their intuition, while others follow reasoning and objective judgment. Even though the series portrays the latter as the win, case by case always differ.
“People Are Oblivious To Reality. They Only See What They Want To See”
Henry Simpleton – Season 1
In his continuous rant towards the unbeknownst participants in his experiment, Henry Simpleton, played by Anton Lesser and famous for his villain role in Game of Thrones, firmly believes that reality is a bigger perspective than the tunnel vision everyone seems to look into.
Fans of the series can relate to this quote, given the fact that anyone so focused on one thing happening often disregard the many other things that are also going around. Some decide what they want to see and only look in that specific direction with that specific perspective. Maybe broadening viewpoints could be beneficial to expand reality and opportunity.
“Sometimes We Have To Let Things Go Because We Can’t Keep Them Forever”
Maura Franklin – Season 1, Episode 8
Addressing her son and the bug he would like to keep as a pet, Maura tells him that he, unfortunately, won’t be able to watch it grow, as he needs to release it back to freedom instead of imprisoning it.
Her thoughts mirror her own plans about her boy, having to ultimately let him fly with his own wings once he grows up. And the quote applies to everyone, as most of the time human nature tends to cling to things they love or things they own, forgetting that letting go is essentially freedom.
“May Your Coffee Kick In Before Reality Does “
Season 1, Episode 8
The end of the final episode of the international sci-fi series leaves Maura with a note she had seen previously on the Kereberos stating that coffee hopefully kicks in before reality does. In a turn of events, reality appears to me in 2099 after 7 episodes taking place in 1899.
The funny quote aside from shocking Maura of the realization, does indeed apply to viewers of the show, especially to millennials and Gen Z who thrive on their coffees in the morning, before real life kicks in with college and jobs.
“We’re Born Into This World Either A Seeker Or An Avoider”
Henry Simpleton Season 1, Episode 8
In one of his interesting monologue explanation, Henry Simpleton talks about seekers and avoiders of the world, and how the former usually leads an easier and less aware life than the latter.
His description is aimed at his daughter Maura, whom he considers to be a seeker, always hungry for knowledge and information, but leading a hard and painful life. The interesting quote speaks at a larger scale, to those constantly seeking self-discovery and awareness compared to others oblivious and living a more superficial shallow life.
