The Vampire Diaries: 10 Katherine Pierce Plot Holes That Make No Sense

[ad_1]

Nina Dobrev has been nurturing her entrepreneurial spirit lately with her company Fresh Vine, which has also gone public, reflecting her keen business instinct. However, her most memorable foray into the public eye has been her multiple roles in The Vampire Diaries, of which Katherine Pierce continues to be her crowning glory.

Katherine was a pure delight to watch onscreen – the right mix of cunning, wit, and vulnerability that few other characters could nail. She had the most interesting storylines in the show, but there were parts of the plot that perforated under the pressure of how vast the TVD Universe was. Katherine’s arc on the show would have been a lot more satisfying if these plot holes had been rectified.

Coming To The Salvatore House

While the show established that Katherine was an orphan who had lost her family in the fire and thus come to stay with the Salvatores, it was unclear as to how she came to stay there and why she chose it. She was welcomed as a guest of Giuseppe in 1864, but fans are unclear about why she knew him and how the connection was made.

Coming to the Salvatore house was a turning point for her, so much so that losing the boys became Katherine’s greatest fear in TVD. She just seemed to appear in Mystic Falls with Emily, with no explanation.

Being A Traveler

Up until season 5, there had been no mention of Katherine’s possible witchy lineage. Her past had been delved into extensively in almost every season prior, so it was definitely a big miss to not mention that her family belonged to a long line of Travelers and that she had been a user of magic earlier.

There were many ways in which Katherine’s family did her wrong, which is the harsh reality of The Vampire Diaries, but the writers should have thought of mentioning that her family were no ordinary humans. If Traveler magic ran in her veins, Katherine could have used this to her advantage when Klaus was on her tail.

Damon Seeing Katherine Being Dragged Into The Church

TVD depended on flashbacks for storytelling quite often, but many of them didn’t add up, especially in Katherine’s case. One depicted Damon telling Stefan that he had watched Katherine getting dragged into the church in Mystic Falls, which was then lit on fire. This conversation happened after the brothers woke up post-transition.

Conversely, there was a flashback in season 2 in which Katherine was seen escaping with George Lockwood, while Damon and Stefan lay dead behind her. There was no way that Damon could have woken up to see Katerina being hauled into the church after she had already fled town.

Elijah Leaving Katherine

It was clear that Katherine shared a special love for Elijah, unlike the other men she had used for her survival. When they reunited, Elijah felt betrayed for her crimes against Elena, which made no sense. Elena had harmed the Mikaelsons in the past, so Elijah leaving Katherine for her made no sense.

Moreover, Katherine made the ultimate sacrifice by handing over the cure, her biggest leverage to him, still Elijah chose not to be with her. He clearly had affection for her but did not trust her, which was quite absurd for everything Katherine did to show her dedication to him.

Nadia Not Finding Katherine For Centuries

Katherine was a character fans hated at first, but loved later, and her complex history contributed to her appeal. Her daughter had managed to find a way to cross over to the supernatural but didn’t find Katherine for nearly 600 years, which didn’t add up because of the trail that Katherine left behind her.

The Originals were after Katherine for her doppelganger blood, and she had made enough enemies in her supernatural life. She was infamous for her deeds and wickedness, so it made no sense that Nadia didn’t find her earlier.

Being Drained Of The Cure By Silas

Image of Elena Gilbert and Katherine Pierce on The Vampire Diaries, they are both bloody and on the floor after Elena just fed Katherine the cure to save herself.

Turning Katherine human by giving her the cure was one true plot twist (which the show ultimately undid) but the way she was drained of the cure was extremely inconsistent. Lore said that for someone else to get the cure, the previously cured had to be drained of their blood, and only then would the new cure work.

However, later on, Stefan and Damon were able to transition back to being human with only syringes full of Elena’s blood. This is a plot hole that continues to annoy fans because Katherine was made to suffer unnecessarily, and Silas being so awful to the person who raised him from the dead also did not add up.

Not Getting Klaus’ Blood For Nadia

Katherine was quite heartless for most part, but she was soft for Nadia, who had been taken from her too soon. She cared for Nadia, which was why it struck viewers odd that she did not go to Klaus to obtain blood to cure her of the wolf bite that was killing her.

Katherine had saved many, including Stefan and Damon, and she had even approached Klaus in the past. It was out of character for her to let go of helping her only daughter live, especially because the price to pay was no longer as high.

Body Snatching Elena

While finding ways to survive was typical for Katherine, there was plenty to be questioned about how she passengered herself into Elena’s body. For starters, Bonnie should have raised alarms when she did not feel her passing through her to the Other Side, which should have been the first indicator that Elena was not herself.

Katherine also acted nothing like Elena when she body snatched her, but everyone acted as if everything was okay. It was almost as if these important factors had deliberately been ignored to provide some friction between Damon and Elena.

No Compulsion Breaks

TVD‘s record with faded or broken compulsions was quite spotty, and it bled into Katherine’s story too. When she turned human, all the compulsions that she had carried out in the past should have been broken or reversed, according to what happened with Stefan when he turned human.

He was skewered when people came out of the fog, but Katherine had compelled whole towns in her days as a vampire. Nobody came out of the woodwork to take Katherine to task for her crimes. She got lucky with this compulsion plot hole.

Going To Hell

Katherine and Stefan's death in "I Was Feeling Epic" in The Vampire Diaries

Katherine returning as the Queen of Hell was an epic plot twist, but it was also hard to believe that characters like Klaus, Damon and Stefan, who had killed and tortured countless people, could find atonement and not Katherine, who had not done the kind of harm they had.

She had done what she had to, to survive, whereas the rest had hurt people for fun. Condemning Katherine to her fiery fate without final peace just did not add up at all.
