How Does I Am Groot Fit Into the MCU Canon?

Many viewers have wondered if watching I Am Groot is necessary to understand the ongoing events in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. According to producer Brad Winderbaum, the series takes place during a very brief window of time between the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and the post-credits scene where Baby Groot has matured into a teenage tree. On the other hand, Guardians of the Galaxy director and co-writer James Gunn suggested that I Am Groot was not directly related to the films and instead exists in a world of its own. Regardless, creator Kirsten Lepore regularly met with Gunn to ensure that Baby Groot was being portrayed in the spirit of his original character.

The 5 I Am Groot shorts begin by showing Baby Groot living in a pot, cared for by a group of robots. When the robots replace him with a bonsai plant, Baby Groot attacks the newcomer and both plants end up on the floor with smashed pots. This results in Baby Groot realizing he can walk as he eventually escapes the scene of the accident on foot. Physical comedy is a continuing theme in many of the shorts, as mischievous Baby Groot utilizes his special abilities to explore and interact with the world around him. In the final short, Baby Groot is seen aboard Star-Lord’s Milano ship, gathering various objects from his shipmates’ quarters in order to make a memento of the crew which ends up being explosive. Bradley Cooper returns to voice Rocket in this short, and the raccoon is saved by Baby Groot after falling into a hole created by the detonation.
