Why Milla Jovovich’s Alice Has Never Appeared In A Resident Evil Game

[ad_1]

Milla Jovovich’s zombie slayer character Alice is the iconic protagonist of the Resident Evil movie franchise but what Resident Evil game is Alice from? Newcomers to the long-running franchise are often confused about whether Alice is in a Resident Evil game since she resembles some of the Resident Evil games’ best characters, but she has never appeared in any of the video games. Under Paul W.S. Anderson, the Resident Evil movie franchise would go on to become the most successful film series based on a video game property, with the six movies grossing a combined $1.2 billion worldwide. However, in an unusual move, Anderson opted not to directly adapt any of the games for his movie, creating an original story with new characters that centered around the struggles of Milla Jovovich’s Alice.

Alice is an original character created for the movies, and though she’s not from any Resident Evil game, Anderson has commented in the past that Alice was initially intended to be an amalgamation of the video games’ female protagonists. Notably, Alice is also not featured in the 2021 Resident Evil reboot nor the short-lived Resident Evil Netflix series – which both exist in their own respective universes independent of Anderson and Alice’s films. While the movie and series future of the franchise seems bleak, with the Resident Evil 4 video game remake slated for release in 2023 and more new games in the franchise’s future, it may just be a matter of time before Alice becomes a playable character. That said, there are several reasons why Alice’s Resident Evil game debut is yet to happen.

Anderson Wanted To Tell His Own Resident Evil Story

Why is Alice in a Resident Evil game such a tall order for the franchise? It’s mainly because the Resident Evil movie was originally conceived as a prequel, explaining how the outbreak occurred. Anderson also felt a direct adaptation would spoil the tension since fans would know characters like Jill Valentine or Chris Redfield would survive. This led to the creation of Alice, who has since become one of the most memorable characters in Milla Jovovich’s movie career.

The first Resident Evil movie opens with Alice waking up in an empty mansion with no memory, but is soon led by a strike team to a hidden underground lab. The story of the movie was heavily inspired by Alice In Wonderland, including Alice’s name, a villain named the Red Queen, and the lab itself is essentially Wonderland. The changes upset some fans but ultimately proved successful enough to launch a billion-dollar movie franchise.

While the movies are somewhat controversial with fans, Alice herself has become an iconic female action hero, and while Jovovich herself has commented that while she would love to have Alice included in a game, it’s Capcom that isn’t interested. The gaming giant is happy to license the series and reap the financial benefits of the movies, but they’re also protective of the brand and want to keep the movie universe clear of the games. Indeed, though the success of Milla Jovovich’s Resident Evil movies speaks for itself, the largely lambasted 2021 reboot Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City – and the cancelation of the Netflix series – suggest that Capcom made the right call.

For the same reason as Alice, major game characters who appeared in the movies, such as Jill Valentine and Leon Kennedy, didn’t return for Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, since Capcom wouldn’t allow them to be killed off. Alice not appearing in a Resident Evil game also makes sense logically, since the movies depict a bleak, post-apocalyptic future, whereas the video games do not. The Final Chapter was conceived as the end for Alice on the big screen, so it’s unlikely she’ll appear in another movie. It would be nice to see her reappear in a Resident Evil game and have her character come full circle – but for now, Capcom doesn’t appear interested in making that a reality.

Alice Proves The Resident Evil Games Are Tricky Source Material

The 30th anniversary of the Resident Evil franchise is just a couple of years away and Alice’s Resident Evil game appearance still hasn’t happened, underscoring just how tricky it was for Anderson to develop his adaptation in the first place. In fact, the Anderson movies are still the best Resident Evil adaptations, despite trying the least to stick to the Capcom source material. Meanwhile, Netflix’s Resident Evil (which is canon to the game) and Welcome to Raccoon City, which stuck to the source material much more closely, were flops. Alice, on the other hand, isn’t canon, and that might actually be why her Resident Evil movies are the best ones.

Putting Alice in a Resident Evil game remains a trickier prospect than producing a movie or series adaptation of video game canon. When considering how Anderson’s movies with Alice and the Resident Evil video games both have their own following and look increasingly stronger with every year that passes, it appears that Capcom has been proven justified in keeping the two separate. Milla Jovovich’s Alice can still return in a future movie, but it’s highly unlikely that the character will ever cross over into the actual games.
