There’s a potentially huge change happening to Princess Charlotte‘s royal title.

King Charles III is reportedly planning to change the title of the 7-year-old daughter of Prince William and Princess Kate in honor of his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

According to a royal insider, via Mail Online, the King of England is preparing to name the young girl as the Duchess of Edinburgh, a title that was held by Queen Elizabeth before ascending to the throne in 1952.

“Discussions are under way, but the favored outcome for the King is that this title ought to go to Princess Charlotte,” the source said.

“It would be a fitting way to remember the Queen – who, of course, had the title Duchess of Edinburgh – and a way for His Majesty to honour the line of succession.”

Charlotte’s position is historically significant because she is the first female member of the Royal Family whose place in the line of succession will not be surpassed by her younger brother,” the source added.

“So it is constitutionally significant that Charlotte should be given such a corresponding title, because it is not beyond the realms of possibility that she will accede the throne if, for example, Prince George does not have children.”

The insider also claimed that it’s the reason he has not yet named his brother, Prince Edward, as the Duke of Edinburgh following the death of their father, Prince Philip, in 2021.

“It shows you what the King is thinking. It’s about promoting those directly in line to the throne rather than those on the edges,” the source said.
