The inaugural weekend of February ushers in a plethora of ongoing events in Vancouver. Here are five noteworthy attractions to explore over the next few days.

1. Vancouver Sevens

The annual Vancouver Sevens rugby tournament commenced on Friday at BC Place, captivating spectators throughout the weekend. Both men’s and women’s tournament champions will be crowned in the gold-medal matches on Sunday afternoon.

With 24 teams from 12 countries participating in 64 rugby sevens matches, the event is an exhilarating experience cheered on by creatively costumed fans. While general-admission tickets for Saturday are already sold out, reserved seating tickets and multi-day passes are still available on the Vancouver Sevens website.

2. VMF Winter Arts Festival

At BC Place and various downtown locations, the VMF Winter Arts Festival presents “Blanketing The City: Lighting The Way,” a captivating free outdoor installation. Created in collaboration with xʷməθkʷəy̓əm weaver and designer Debra Sparrow, this installation is part of her ongoing public art series.

Reclaiming the Vancouver skyline with weaving patterns passed down for thousands of years by the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh people, the installations will be visible nightly until 11 p.m. until February 27. Detailed information and locations of the seven displays can be found online.

3. Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival

Friday marks the opening night of the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival, a weeklong celebration of filmmaking and the great outdoors. Featuring over 70 “mountain and adventure stories,” the event includes special guest speakers, filmmaker intros, and expert-led workshops on photography, storytelling, and mountain safety skills.

Running until March 3, the festival takes place at theaters across the city and online. Further details can be found on the VIMFF website.

4. Maker Supply Market

The Heritage Hall on Main Street hosts the second edition of Vancouver Etsy Co.’s Maker Supply Market on Saturday, showcasing more than 40 local artisans. This market provides vendors with the opportunity to sell a variety of items, including making supplies, samples, craft materials, and more—all priced at $50 or less.

Admission to the market is free, and reservations can be made in advance online.

5. An Indigenous Misadventure

A creative reimagining of Molière’s renowned play, Tartuffe, is set to unfold at the Granville Island Stage. Titled “Father Tartuffe: An Indigenous Misadventure,” the narrative places the story in the aftermath of Expo 67 and the 100th anniversary of Canadian confederation.

The synopsis on the play’s website describes a tale where Orin and his family, thriving on the Rez, must rally together when the gullible patriarch welcomes the con artist Father Tartuffe into their home. The challenge is to save themselves from the imposter’s conniving ways and expose Tartuffe’s less-than-holy intentions. The event kicks off this weekend, promising a unique theatrical experience.
