How much better will Charvarius Ward make the 49ers?

Over recent seasons, the cornerback position has proved to be the Achilles’ heel of the San Francisco 49ers with performances in such a crucial role ultimately costing them the chance to go on and win the Super Bowl. Indeed, the 2020 Super Bowl LIV runners-up have struggled to find an adequate cornerback that can match their lofty ambitions. There is a feeling, however, that this season could be different.

Of course, as things stand, the 49ers are once again in the reckoning for Super Bowl glory this season and if you bet on NFL outright markets you will know as much after the San Francisco franchise was priced at 14/1. This early price is reflective of the work that the team has done during the free agent tampering period after they signed Charvarius Ward to plug the cornerback hole.

It’s an interesting move for a few reasons given that for a long time, the latest NFL draft tips suggested that the 49ers would bring in a cornerback during the official draft.

Instead, they have seemingly solved that problem by signing Ward six weeks before the 2022 draft begins. Is he the answer though?

It won’t come as a surprise to learn that it entirely depends on who you speak to given that Ward has endured two very different back-to-back seasons before joining the 49ers. For instance, during Ward’s last season, he missed just 4.3 percent of his tackles at cornerback which is a championship-winning return.

In 2020, however, he committed as many as 11 penalties in 14 games which perhaps shows how fine the line is between stout defense and careless infringements. Either way, Ward was on the wrong side of it but it should be stressed that the 25-year-old took all the criticism on board and as briefly mentioned, produced more than a few match-winning displays in 2021.

Needless to say, the 49ers will hope that they will be getting that version of Ward which is why they’ve shelled out $42 million over three seasons for his services.

As for the actual player’s hopes, Ward is supremely confident that he will bring success to the 49ers and said after signing: “Whatever this coaching staff wants me to do, I’m going to promise you I’ll do it to the best of my ability and they won’t be disappointed. Nor will the fans.”

This type of attitude will undoubtedly be a breath of fresh air for Niners fans and it’s also interesting to note that Ward, to a certain degree, sees himself as a utility player who is open to operating wherever the team needs him to.

Of course, the former Kansas City Chief player will be specifically used at cornerback but the fact that Ward is ready to roll up his sleeves and get stuck in can only bode well for the 49ers as they embark on a new campaign. Indeed, with a very specific set of skills that the 49ers are in desperate need of and coupled with a can-do attitude, you have to conclude that Charvarius Ward will make his new franchise a lot better.
