The Nintendo Switch was a groundbreaking console on its initial release in 2017 and has been an extremely popular console for gamers ever since. This is thanks to its portable form factor and accessible roster of video games, including Nintendo-exclusive IPs; for the majority of its lifetime, the Switch has been the number one best-selling US console.
Having been around a little while, it has collected an impressive array of games available to play – so many it’s hard to choose exactly which to devote your time to. Here, we dive into three of the best RPGs available on the platform to help you narrow things down a little.
Stardew Valley
Developed and continuously updated by a team of one, Stardew Valley was and continues to be a runaway success and contender for the social simulator of the decade. In Stardew Valley, your character eschews the rigors of corporate living to build a farm from the ground up and meets a host of wonderful characters in the process. There are community centers to rebuild (or the equally controversial corporate supermarkets), mines to explore, relationships to foster, and, of course, a farm to grow. All of this makes for an engrossing experience, which many spend hundreds of hours enjoying.
Pokémon Legends: Arceus
Pokémon Legends: Arceus is a Nintendo Switch exclusive, and the latest installment in the global phenomenon of a franchise that is Pokémon but it differs significantly from the games that came before. Arceus is an RPG with open-world elements that redefines the relationship between player and Pokémon and has more in common with Breath of the Wild than with previous Pokémon titles.
Considering the vast amount of Pokemon titles to play, whether it’s Pokemon GO or Pokemon Unite, it’s daunting to get started. Luckily, there are various Pokémon articles out there to help you with tips and suggestions, not only for playing the game but also for understanding more about the general mechanics of the Pokémon universe from types to gyms and beyond. Arceus is a band apart from pretty much every other entry in the series and set before the events of all of them – making the game the perfect jumping-on point for those new to the franchise, as well as an excellent stand-alone RPG to enjoy regardless of the setting.

The Witcher 3 was a turning point for Polish developers CD Projekt RED, thrusting them into the spotlight with their rewarding, expansive, in-depth study of Andrzej Sapkowski’s fantasy world. In 2019, this gigantic game made an unprecedented move: a port onto the Nintendo Switch.
Now the fantastical world of monsters and legends, despot kings, and rebellious witches can be enjoyed to the fullest on a device smaller than an iPad, a a humongous achievement and a new breath of life to the critically acclaimed RPG. The Witcher 3 is the oldest game on this list, but endlessly re-playable with many pathways you can take as the titular Witcher, Geralt. This immersive experience is a more hands-on, action-heavy RPG, satisfying those who prefer the hack-and-slash to farming simulation.
The Nintendo Switch is home to hundreds of wonderful titles, from renowned developers and independent studios alike. These are just three of a vast array of games available on the platform, but they are also some of the most engaging – guaranteed to steal your attention and your evenings.
