The Witcher season 2 footage confirms Henry Cavill will continue to slay … monsters

After nearly two years off the air, The Witcher season 2 is upon us— and with new footage to prove it. At the Tudum fan event on Saturday, Netflix debuted a trailer which … was more of a sizzle reel of season 1 with a few hints of what’s to come. The promise: bigger roles for Anya Chalotra’s Yennefer and Freya Allan’s Ciri, and Henry Cavill’s Geralt of Rivia kicking more monster butt.

The Witcher, based on the novels by Andrzej Sapkowski (not the CD Projekt Red game, itself an adaptation), previously told the multi-pronged story of Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri as they traversed the Continent in search of their destinies — or a few coins. The stories converged in a time-loopy season 1, leaving season 2 to be a more straightforward adaptation of Sapkowski’s first Witcher novel, Blood of Elves. A behind-the-scenes video released in April confirmed the direction, with a subsequent teaser trailer suggesting it may finally be time for Ciri to begin her Witcher training.

During Tudum, Netflix also premiered two key clips from season 2, both involving Geralt. In the first, the Witcher converses with a monster pal about what he really needs to tell Ciri:

The second finds Geralt in pure Witcher mode, slurpin’ some elixer and preparing for battle.

The core Witcher show is just the tip of the iceberg for what Netflix has in store for its budding mega-franchise. In August, the streamer premiered The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, the first of what animation outfit Studio Mir hopes will be many prequel stories told within the universe. 2022 will see the arrival of The Witcher: Blood Origin, a miniseries focused on the Conjunction of the Spheres, an event that shaped the Continent into the world Geralt knows. The Witcher showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, who recently signed a deal with Netflix to create even more series for the streamer, will oversee all the productions. But the flagship series is everything — and it’s coming.

The Witcher season 2 premieres on Netflix on Dec. 17. And in good news, an undated season 3 was officially announced during the event, too.
