Chicago police shoot man accused of shooting at neighbors in West Pullman, CPD says

CHICAGO (WLS) — Chicago police said an officer was involved in a shooting in West Pullman Wednesday afternoon.

Investigators said the incident originally started because the suspect allegedly came out of his home several times with a gun and shot at neighbors, hitting one of them.

That neighbor is now in surgery at Christ Hospital.

Now, Chicago Police and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability conducting two separate investigations.

Police said the shooting happened in the 100-block of West 126th Place.

A 52-year-old man allegedly fired his guns at neighbors multiple times, striking one of them before two Chicago police officers shot him.

Police said the man first came out with a shotgun and fired at neighbors, before going back into his house and getting another gun.

“They engaged him and used a myriad of de-escalation tactics, including begging for the offender to drop the weapon,” said Dep. Chief Sean Loughran with the Chicago Police Department.

But police say that didn’t work.

“He then began walking from the scene and engaged other officers who also used de-escalation tactics. At that point, he points the weapon at on uninvolved third party citizen and menaces him, and officers were forced to fire,” Dep. Chief Loughran said.

When officers arrived, they said they found him with one of the guns in his hand.

Police said the suspect was shot in the hand and officers recovered a gun at the scene.

No police officers were injured, CPD said.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability, or COPA, confirmed it is investigating the shooting and are at the scene.

The two officers involved have been placed on administrative leave.
