A second Norfolk Southern freight train derailed on Thursday, but no hazmat leak was reported.

Dozens of cars went off the rails around 8:30 a.m. near Van Buren Township, Mich.

Approximately 30 cars were involved in the derailment, but no one was injured. Most of the cars were empty except for one carrying grain. None of the cars that overturned were carrying hazardous materials, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes said.

The incident comes nearly two weeks after a Norfolk Southern train derailed and caught fire in East Palestine, Ohio, leading to tons of harmful hazardous chemicals being released and thousands of people being evacuated from the area. People who have returned to the town have reported numerous issues likely related to the chemical spill, like sickness and dead pets.

An emergency crew works at the site of a Norfolk Southern train derailment in Van Buren Township, Mich., near Detroit, on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2023.

On Thursday, a car containing liquid chlorine remained on the tracks and was not affected by the derailment. The soil and waterways in the area were undisturbed by the derailment, officials said.

Parts of the tracks were damaged and several cars were disconnected from their wheels.

A nearby road was closed, but reopened Thursday evening.

“My team & I are in touch with federal, state, & local officials & first responders regarding the train derailment in Van Buren Township,” Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.) said in a statement. “Currently, we are not aware of any releases of hazardous materials. We will continue monitoring the situation & updating the public as we learn more.”
