NYC driver dies after vehicle flips in air, lands in JFK area lot, explodes into flames

A driver died after he lost control on a Queens expressway early Monday and his vehicle flipped in the air, landing in a tow lot just outside Kennedy Airport where it exploded, setting a fire that quickly spread to other vehicles, police said.

The doomed driver was zipping toward Long Island on the Nassau Expressway when he lost control near exit 1S about 3:30 a.m., cops said.

His vehicle overturned in the air, landing in the tow lot near 152nd Ave. and 126th St. in South Ozone Park, just outside JFK Airport.

A worker at the lot said the car went flying off the expressway, smashing through a tree and a fence before landing on several cars.

The vehicle exploded and the blaze spread to multiple cars parked in the lot.

Neighbor Babita Basdeo said her husband woke up to the noise and yelled, “Oh my God, there’s a fire!”

“We didn’t know it was an accident,” she said. “We thought maybe a car heated up, a fire.”

“It was a big huge fire,” she added. “If we didn’t call (911) maybe our house would have vanished.”

The driver died at the scene. Cops were working to identify him.

A worker at the lot who gave his name as Josh saw the charred body of the victim.

“It was an Infiniti,” he said. “All was that was left of him (the victim) was a little piece … I thought it was a tree trunk … He had a few bones and a skull.”

One firefighter hurt battling the blaze was taken with minor injuries to Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Sixty firefighters responded to the scene.

Andre, another neighbor described a “bright fire.”

“I heard the boom,” he said. “It woke me up.”
