Readers sound off on Zeldin’s abortion stance, tax returns and anti-Semitism

Manhattan: I strongly urge every responsible New Yorker to do his or her own research before entering the voting booth on Tuesday. GOP darling and Donald Trump acolyte Lee Zeldin is out on the campaign trail desperately trying to paint himself as a moderate Republican when that couldn’t be further from the truth.

As he feverishly works to reinvent himself (temporarily, I can assure you) as someone who considers New York’s current abortion laws “settled” (sound familiar?), his record proves pretty conclusively that he is almost zealot-like in his opposition to women’s rights.

Taking New York in the wrong direction.

While Zeldin may attempt to hide the facts, his record doesn’t lie. He has stated unequivocally that he supports a full ban on abortion, with no exceptions for rape, incest or the life of the mother. He once pledged to vote against any funding for abortion and promised to deny funding to Planned Parenthood. He has voted against providing contraception and family planning services to the Armed Forces, to bar private insurance coverage of abortion, and to block federal funding for it. In May, he spoke to an anti-abortion group, telling them that, if elected, he plans to appoint a “pro-life health commissioner, as opposed to what we’re used to.”

Meanwhile, his list of campaign contributors reads like a who’s who of the most rabid right-wing pro-insurrectionists and includes thousands of dollars in handouts from the likes of Trump, Kevin McCarthy, Steve Scalise, Trey Gowdy and Jim Jordan. We’re hardly talking mainstream here. Is this really the guy we want running New York? Anne Stockton

Mohegan Lake, N.Y.: It is absurd to think that any single candidate, regardless of party affiliation, will be an instant cure-all for the crime that is so prevalent these days. Clearly, most of the crimes are committed by unbalanced, uncaring individuals who ignore reason and threats of punishment. No one running for office is in favor of crime. Lee Zeldin’s draconian threats will not deter criminals, whose behavior is irrational. Catering to fossil fuel interests will do more harm to voters and the planet than all of the violent felons put together. Unless we work together to prolong the life of our planet, all the other issues are moot. Jane Simms

Manhattan: Voicer Fred Schoeneborn wrote that if someone could show him where in the Constitution it reads that “your right to an abortion is guaranteed,” he’d “become a liberal!” Well, my right to bodily autonomy and an abortion is indeed guaranteed in the Constitution: It’s in the Ninth, 13th and 14th Amendments. The Ninth states that I have civil and human rights not specified in the Constitution; the 13th states that I can’t be forced into labor or slavery, including sexual slavery; and the 14th states that all people (including different races, religions and genders) are guaranteed the same protections under the law. So, my rights are guaranteed right next to Schoeneborn’s right to penis enlargement, Viagra, cures for Peyronie’s disease and prostate surgery. Schoeneborn would know all of this if only he read and understood the Constitution. Sam Katz

Jamaica: Did you all read how the Republicans and conservatives didn’t want people to vote by mail (“Court upholds New York absentee-ballot laws,” Nov. 3)? And these are the people who you want in office? These are people who are liars and deniers. They want to take away our right to vote, what else do they want to take away? Oh yeah — our democracy, Social Security and Medicare, and that’s truly sad. God bless America! Charlene Black

Chappaqua, N.Y.: Talk about inarticulate — I’d vote for John Fetterman any day over the likes of Herschel Walker because it isn’t just about being understood, it’s about character and baggage. Renée Pollard

Utica, N.Y.: To Voicer Mike Armstrong, who wanted President Biden’s taxes investigated: Where are you getting your news? Fox News? How do you know that the Bidens are getting millions of dollars from foreign countries? Your crystal ball? If it’s from Fox News then you’re very gullible. The channel only gives its opinions, not facts. If you want to believe them, that’s your problem. The reason you didn’t hear it from “the media” is that it doesn’t exist. Biden’s tax returns have long been publicly released, unlike his predecessor. By the way, have you written in on why Donald Trump still hasn’t released his taxes? Francisco Matos

Cincinnati: Trump and schoolyard bully Marge Greene have the same fans. Trump’s legacy will show that the majority of his cult following is uneducated and racist. This is why he is always angry. They are people he probably made fun of his whole life but now they are all he has. Greene is the shining example of how easy it is to wrangle these people to your side. Preach hatred and white power. It’s that easy. Attention Christians: Jesus is about peace and love. Satan is about rage and hatred. Mark Jessee

Hackensack, N.J.: I was heartbroken to read of the bakery worker locked in a walk-in freezer overnight (”Dies trapped in freezer,” Nov. 4). How is it legal or possible that you can operate a walk-in freezer without a means of escape in just such an emergency? The worker’s death was completely avoidable. What a tragedy. Richard A. Naumann

Manhattan: The Commission to Reimagine the Future of New York’s Courts has a pandemic practices working group headed by Judge Craig J. Doran. It seeks to evaluate technology, practices and policies adopted by state courts in response to the pandemic. It seeks input from stakeholders of New York’s courts. The deadline for submission is Nov. 7. Unfortunately, the hearing panel will not accept any comments, written or oral, about individual cases, judges or attorneys. I have a long-standing Housing Court case in Queens state Supreme Court. The case has been severely impacted and postponed several times because I have requested an in-person hearing rather than virtual appearances via Zoom. Meanwhile, I am living in a shelter. I have wanted to testify before the working group about how my case is being handled, but if the panel will not hear individual cases about judges, how do I let my voice be heard? Cecilia Gullas

Merion Station, Pa.: The lead-up to the massive 1938 pogrom known as Kristallnacht, the 84th anniversary of which is Nov. 9, involved a lot of anti-Semitic rhetoric and some violence well before that deadly night of terror was unleashed on Jews across Germany and Austria. Today in America, a former president, a politician running for governor of Pennsylvania, a billionaire rapper/clothing mogul, a basketball star and several members of Congress share little in common except various anti-Semitic tropes that they’ve spewed forth. I’m not suggesting that America 2022 is Germany 1938, but then again, my synagogue alerted me that the FBI received “credible information of a broad threat to synagogues” in New Jersey. Paul L. Newman

Plainview, L.I.: Given all the evil that anti-Semitic/anti-sensitive/anti-Semper Fidelis Kyrie Irving has falsely associated Jews with, I will deliberately and misleadingly associate him with the KKK (“Kyrie, Koach-Killer”). As for Irving’s disingenuous claim that “I cannot be anti-Semitic if I know where I come from,” I’d like to point out that killer of 6 million Jews Adolf Hitler undoubtedly knew that he came from Braunau, Austria, where he was born. And who knows if the recent “credible threat” to Jewish synagogues in New Jersey is an indirect result of this Kurrent Kyrie Karnival? Richard Siegelman

Brooklyn: Why is it that we can’t fix the homelessness problem in our city but we can let thousands of immigrants into our overpopulated city, feed and clothe them and find them housing? Linda Guidice

Boynton Beach, Fla.: Nikolas Cruz admitted he killed 17 beautiful children and he gets life in prison. Where is the justice for these kids and their parents? How is this fair and acceptable? Sheri Scharf
