As well as his own seat of Bulleen, Guy spent time at polling booths in Eltham, Ringwood, Ashwood, Oakleigh and Caulfield among others. He even hit up Melbourne, a seat where the Liberals run third, well behind the Greens and Labor.

At the bowls club, members Gary Baird, Johnny Phelps and Brian Salvage were enjoying a post-match drink after losing to Vermont South on Saturday before going home to watch the TV coverage.

The dyed-in-the-wool Liberal voters were hoping their loss wasn’t a bad omen for Guy, but they also didn’t rate his chances very highly.

“I think there will be a minority Labor government,” said Salvage. “I don’t think anyone expects the Liberal Party will get up,” said Baird.

If Guy did manage to pull off the unlikeliest of wins, they were keen to get in his ear about improving their club’s facilities with some much-needed government funding.

“It’s prime real estate, we just don’t want to lose it [the club],” said Salvage. “We’d like the political parties to help us out,” added Baird.

Guy appeared weary but relaxed as he voted in the morning at Serpell Primary School in Templestowe along with his wife and three kids.

It was democracy without the added extras, with no barbecue on-site for Guy to turn sausages with a pair of tongs while the photographers snap away.

Asked if his party could defy most predictions and win an extra 18 seats to form government, Guy responded simply: “Yep, we can. We actually can.”

Guy cited victories by WA premier Mark McGowan and wins by Victorian premiers Steve Bracks and Ted Baillieu as previous examples where big margins had been overcome by opposition parties.

While the latest opinion polls showed a Coalition victory appeared unlikely, Guy was still bullish about his chances.

“I’m confident that Victorians, at the end of the day, will opt for a new government and a fresh start,” he said.

“It’s going to be a longer count, you’ll get booth results in earlier which may be very different to the final result because what happens on the day is maybe not reflected in what’s come during waves of pre-polls.”

Asked how he was feeling coming up against Andrews again four years after being rejected by voters, Guy laughed:

“I think the mood is very different, I know it’s different. Victorians are looking for something, they are looking for that fresh start.”

Guy also reflected on a long and bruising campaign.

“It’s certainly a relief to have the campaign over,” he said.

“They’re long, they’re gruelling, they’re arduous. There’s high pressure in them. But that’s politics. And that’s an election campaign and I’ve enjoyed this one very, very much.”
