Police charge Calgary man after 17-hour standoff near Mississauga hospital | CBC News

Police say a man has been charged with multiple offences after a 17-hour standoff on Friday at a medical facility in Mississauga, Ont.

Peel police say they were called to a facility that is near Credit Valley Hospital at 7:40 a.m. and were alerted to a person with several firearms who had barricaded himself in a medical building.

They say the person “presented a significant risk to public safety” and to the safety of first responders because of their proximity to the hospital.

Crisis negotiators were dispatched to the scene to negotiate with the individual and evacuate the people in the building, and the man was taken into custody Saturday just after midnight.

Police say a 66-year-old man from Calgary has been charged with multiple offences, including possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, three counts of forcible confinement and careless use of a firearm.

They say this was an isolated incident and there is no risk to public safety.
