Investigation Unfolds: Federal Raids on Properties Linked to NYC Mayor’s Adviser Winnie Greco

On the morning of February 29, federal agents executed searches at two properties linked to Winnie Greco, a prominent adviser to New York City Mayor Eric Adams. The FBI Federal Raids confirmed the raids at two Bronx addresses owned by Greco, who formerly served as a fundraiser for Mayor Adams and currently holds the position of director of Asian affairs in his administration.

Residents in the vicinity reported that federal agents commenced the searches simultaneously at around 6 a.m., maintaining a presence in the area for several hours. A spokesperson from City Hall announced that Greco has been placed on administrative leave from her role, which carries an approximate salary of $100,000, effective February 29.

The precise catalyst for the raids remains unclear; however, Mayor Adams has been under federal investigation since November, with a focus on the political fundraising activities during his 2021 mayoral campaign, including allegations of potential foreign influence.

This ongoing investigation has previously seen FBI raids on the homes of key figures associated with Adams, such as Brianna Suggs, a major fundraiser, and Rana Abbasova, the director of protocol in the Mayor’s Office for International Affairs. In a related incident, agents seized electronic devices from Mayor Adams in November as he left a public event in Manhattan.

Despite the scrutiny, Mayor Adams has consistently asserted that he is not implicated in any wrongdoing. A spokesperson for the mayor emphasized their commitment to upholding the law and maintaining strict ethical standards among all administration employees.

Winnie Greco, also known by her Chinese name Zheng Qirong, has a longstanding connection with Mayor Adams, dating back to his tenure as the Brooklyn borough president. Initially serving as an unpaid Asian community ambassador during Adams’ earlier years, Greco facilitated multiple trips to China for the mayor. Subsequently, she became a significant fundraiser for Adams and, upon his assumption of the mayoral office, joined City Hall as the director of Asian affairs.

However, Greco has faced scrutiny, with the city’s Department of Investigation launching an inquiry in November. Local media reports raised concerns about her alleged misuse of her position for personal benefits, including the renovation of her Bronx home. The Department of Investigation has yet to respond to inquiries regarding these allegations.

Apart from her roles in city governance, Greco has been associated with Beijing’s interests. The American Asia Economy and Culture Development Association Corp, founded by Greco in 2000, described her as a “patriotic overseas Chinese” fostering friendly bonds between the United States and China. Her work has garnered support from Chinese authorities, including the National People’s Congress and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as per a 2012 archived page of the organization’s website.
