‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’: Rachel Zegler Rejected By DC

After her breakout role as Maria in the remake of West Side Story, Rachel Zegler returns to the silver screen as the character of Anthea in Shazam! Fury of the Gods. However, this wasn’t the only role in the cards for Zegler at DC Studios, with the actress revealing she had previously been rejected from the role of Supergirl in The Flash.
This revelation came from an interview Zegler did with Slashfilm where she spoke on the production of the Shazam! sequel with co-star Lucy Liu who plays Kalypso, a fellow daughter of Atlas. During the interview she was asked about the process of auditioning for this film versus the process for West Side Story:
“Oh gosh, it was so fast,” said Zegler “I auditioned for ‘West Side Story’ for a year…So then with this one, I booked them a month and a half, and I was like, ‘Is this what it’s like? Is it supposed to be like this?’ And my agents were like, ‘Yeah.’ But no, I read for Rich [Delia], who was our casting director, and he originally had come to me with Supergirl for ‘[The] Flash,’ and I was not right for it. He was like, ‘You know what, I’ve got a character in mind for you for ‘Shazam.’ They’re looking at X, Y, Z. We would love it if you came in and read.’”
The role of Supergirl in The Flash eventually went to Sasha Calle. While Calle may have landed the role, her future in it is just as uncertain as many other parts of the DCU. She was originally rumored to have a solo film slated to come out after The Flash, though it appeared as though the film had been cancelled as early as when Batgirl was first cancelled. It has also been left unclear whether she will reprise her role in the recently announced Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, with James Gunn saying that even he does not know Calle’s future in the role.
