Coding Dojo, the Bellevue, Wash.-based software engineering bootcamp operator, has been acquired by Perdoceo, a publicly traded Illinois-based company that owns online academic institutions including Colorado Technical University and American InterContinental University System.

Perdoceo completed the deal Dec. 1 and revealed the acquisition in its annual earnings report Thursday. The deal includes an initial cash payment of $52.8 million and up to $15 million in additional payments if certain financial metrics are met.

Founded in 2013, Coding Dojo trains software engineers in computer programming, data science, cybersecurity and other technologies. The company is No. 40 on the GeekWire 200, a ranked index of Pacific Northwest startups.

Coding Dojo shifted to an online-only business when the pandemic hit, but had since reopened some physical locations.

The company now describes itself as part of Colorado Technical University. It no longer operates physical offices.

Coding Dojo will maintain its day-to-day operations and keep its existing brand and employee base. The company has around 700 employees, according to LinkedIn.

The company previously licensed its courses to institutions around the world. It raised $10 million in venture debt in June.

Access to university-level computer science education is increasingly more competitive, despite growing demand for technical talent.

There are more than 500 code schools worldwide, according to Course Report.

Richard Wang co-founded Coding Dojo in 2013. Wang, the company’s CEO, was previously an executive at pet insurance company Trupanion and a chief of staff at Boeing. He is a venture partner at NextGen Venture Partners.

Perdoceo has around 4,000 employees. It reported $695.2 million in revenue last year, up 0.3% from 2021.
