r/netflix – Firefly Lane is a bad show (Season 1 spoilers)

This whole post is a spoiler for episodes 1-3 of season 1 of firefly lane, you've been warned.

It heavily leans on the trope rape as a backstory. It could have done completely without the horrific showing of the rape scene. It would have been a lot more meaningful and impactful to just have the scene where Tully tells Kate what happened. That was a well done scene.

Tully is raped at 14 and then it scars her for the rest of her life. She can't look men in the eye when having sex, she's retraumatized any time a man tries to be vulnerable with her.

There's multiple comments that she's such a sad person hiding behind the party girl facade.

And let's talk about the subtle purity war here.

Rebel illicit drug taking girl gets raped as a teen, and goody two shoes Kate seems to only have consensual sexual relationships.

And party girl is ruined for the rest of her life because something happened to her as a teen that wasn't her fault.

It's insulting to portray that a woman is ruined forever after a sexual assault. Especially to the millions of women around the globe who have been sexually assaulted and move on with their lives. It shouldn't happen in the first place obviously, but it's ignorant to portray that women who are sexually assaulted only go down a path of self destruction for the rest of their lives.

It has purity culture written all over it.

What's the message here? Your life is only as good as the things that happen to you and you're just screwed for the awful things that happened to you when you were 14?
