“Selective Outrage” TKOs grievance culture, the celebrity of victimhood, and Will Smith’s “b**** s***”

In a world awash in wallowing, Selective Outrage, Rock’s latest stand-up tour de force, hits like a much needed slap across the face — in the case of Will Smith, quite literally.

Selective Outrage addresses the slap heard round the world with Rock’s characteristic blunt force directness, but the special is not simply a conduit through which Rock can laugh last and longest. His smackdown of the Smiths (Jada gets hers too) is worked organically into the larger tapestry of a fiery, incisive, and at times poignant rebuke of modern culture.

Rock wastes no time in establishing the state of play. He unpacks the special’s title right off the top.

I have no problem with wokeness… I’m all for marginalized people getting their rights. The thing I have a problem with is the selective outrage*… Like the kind of people that play Michael Jackson songs, but won’t play R. Kelly. Same crime. One of ’em just got better songs.*

The theme recurs throughout. Rock eviscerates corporate brands making hay off of the virality of social movements in their marketing while perpetuating economic equality in their business practices. He excoriates “motherf***ers typing out woke ass tweets on a phone made by Chinese slaves.”
