Brendan Fraser is joining DC’s Batgirl movie as a villain

Brendan Fraser is making his way to the DC universe (again) as part of the new Batgirl movie, Deadline reported on Monday.

While we don’t know for sure who Fraser is playing yet, Deadline says that the Mummy actor could be playing the Batman villain Firefly. Firefly is a pyromaniac named Garfield Lynns. After suffering extensive burns in an accident, a chemical fire that he started, Lynns creates a fire-resistant suite to help him in his effort to burn Gotham City to the ground.

Batgirl will be directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the duo behind Bad Boys For Life. The movie will star Leslie Grace (In the Heights) as Barbara Gordon, the alter ego of this version of Batgirl. While this will be Fraser’s first time on the big screen in the DC universe, he’s already been a part of it on the small screen for several years in Doom Patrol. Fraser plays Cliff Steele, also known as Robotman, in the series, which started in 2019.

This new role as the possible villain in Batgirl is the latest in a long string of recent casting announcements for Fraser. He’ll star in Darren Aronofsky’s upcoming movie The Whale, as well as a supporting role in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, as well as roles in Behind the Curtain of Night, and Brothers.

The release date for Batgirl hasn’t been announced yet, but the movie will be available on HBO Max when it is released.
