Star Wars Rogue Squadron movie reportedly delayed

The next Star Wars movie appears to have hit a snag. The Patty Jenkins-directed Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, originally slated to hit movie theaters around at the end of 2023, has been delayed, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter.

THR indicated that scheduling conflicts and other commitments are to blame for the delay, and that Rogue Squadron won’t shoot next year, as previously planned. Jenkins’ other known directing obligations include a third Wonder Woman movie for Warner Bros. and a Cleopatra movie for Paramount. Disney and Lucasfilm have not announced a new date for the next Star Wars film, which would have been the first to hit theaters since 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Disney announced Rogue Squadron in December 2020, with Jenkins and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy describing the project as a fighter-pilot movie and set in a “future era” of the Star Wars galaxy. Jenkins told IGN in an interview last year that her take on Rogue Squadron — a Rebel Alliance starfighter squadron founded by Luke Skywalker — was an original story “with great influence from the games and the books.”

Lucasfilm has at least two other Star Wars film projects in the works, including one being led by writer-director Taika Waititi — who also has a very full film slate — and another being developed by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, neither of which are dated. Oh, and Rian Johnson is still theoretically attached to do something with Star Wars, but has two Knives Out sequels to complete.

Much of Star Wars’ confirmed live-action future appears to be made for television, with upcoming Disney Plus series based on Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ahsoka Tano, Lando Calrissian, and Cassian Andor.
