Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer goes full Mad Max: Rainbow Road

Mario’s animated big-screen debut is right around the corner in April. But with a month to go, Nintendo has released one more trailer to preview the Super Mario Bros. Movie. A special Nintendo Direct took place on Thursday on Nintendo’s YouTube channel to premiere the final trailer.

The trailer showed off more of the movie than we’ve seen before, including the reveal that the plot centers around Mario and Peach’s quest to save Luigi from the clutches of Bowser. There are plenty of nods to Mario spinoffs like Super Smash Bros. in the trailer, but the biggest reference is to Mario Kart with everyone racing their way down Rainbow Road, the series’ most famous track.

This is Nintendo’s second Direct dedicated entirely to the Super Mario Bros. Movie. In the last movie-specific Direct, Nintendo revealed Donkey Kong and talked a little bit about his design and how it was changed from the games to the movie. This time around the Direct had a brief appearance from the cast of the movie, but mostly focused on the new trailer.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is set for release on April 5, and is co-produced by Nintendo and Universal Studios and Illumination Animation (Minions: The Rise of Gru). The movie stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, and Charlie Day as Luigi, along with many more.
