CHICAGO (WLS) — A winter storm is expected to make for sloppy travel across the Chicago area Friday morning, and some suburbs have seen over 8 inches of snow.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Boone, Central and Northern Cook, DeKalb, DuPage, Kane, Lee, Ogle, Lake, Winnebago and McHenry counties in Illinois until 10 a.m. Friday.

A Winter Weather Advisory has also been issued for Boone, DeKalb, Kane, Lee, McHenry, Ogle and Winnebago counties until 7 a.m. Friday.

A Winter Weather Advisory for Northern Cook, Central Cook, DuPage and Lake counties is until 7 a.m. Friday.

The Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Eastern St. Joseph, Elkhart, Northern La Porte and Western St. Joseph counties in Indiana until 9 a.m. EST on Friday.

In Wisconsin, Kenosha, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine and Sheboygan counties are under a Winter Storm Warning until 10 a.m. Friday.

Conditions are dramatically different from north to south Friday morning, ABC7 Chicago meteorologist Tracy Butler said.

Bull Valley residents had received over 8 inches of snow by about 4 a.m. Rockford saw nearly 7 inches and Hebron saw 6 inches, Butler said.

There were over 5 inches of snow in Marengo.

But, in the city, west and south, there was less than an inch of accumulation, Butler said.

While the steady snow system will wind down Friday morning, persistent flurries will continue throughout the day.

There were only eight flight cancellations at O’Hare airport Friday morning and four at Midway, with delays of less than 15 minutes at both airports.

In north suburban Lake Forest, snow came down all night, and continued early Friday morning, as crews across Lake County have worked to clear roads.

New video shows crews in other areas, like Gurnee and Libertyville, working to clean up some of the messy roads before the morning commute begins.

Several inches of snow could be seen falling on those roads, as the precipitation accumulates on trees and cars, forcing some drivers to clean off their vehicles.

The snow caught some drivers by surprise. At least one car spun out in Lindenhurst.

If you have to venture out, drivers are saying to give yourself some extra time, and to take it slow.

“It’s slippery, I mean, low visibility, probably only about a quarter mile, just go slow,” driver Ian Trout said.

But the superintendent of the North Chicago Public Works Department has said the city has saved money on salt this year, and only used half its supply, given mild temperatures.

There could be another burst of snow Saturday night into Sunday, which could bring some minor accumulations.
