Multiple shootings at Michigan State University have left three people dead and at least five others injured, and a suspect wanted in the violent acts has died.

Police said that shootings occurred on multiple places on campus, with the gunman escaping from the Michigan State University Union after opening fire there.

The suspect in the shootings was located off-campus just before midnight Eastern time, and police say the suspect has died.

Police identified the deceased suspect as a 43-year-old male who is not affiliated with the university.

“This truly has been a nightmare that we are living tonight, but we have remained laser focused on the safety of our campus, our students and the surrounding community. We are relieved to no longer have an active threat on campus, while we realize that there [will be] so much healing that will need to take place after this,” Deputy Chief Chris Rozman said during a press conference.

A shelter-in-place order has been lifted, and there is no longer an active threat, according to police. Students who witnessed any part of the shooting are being urged to contact police.

“If there are any students that witnessed any of the tragedy that occurred tonight, we would refer them to our tip line and email. We would like to have an investigator speak with them to understand what their experience was during this tragic incident,” Rozman said.

Police initially confirmed that five people were injured after a gunman opened fire at multiple university buildings. At approximately 11:40 p.m. Eastern, police confirmed that three people were killed in the shootings.

According to Rozman, at least some of the five injured victims had “life-threatening” injuries.

The shooting began at approximately 8:18 p.m. at Berkey Hall on campus, with multiple 911 calls placed from that location. According to the latest update from police, two victims were killed in that building.

Police responded quickly to the scene, but the suspect made their way to the Michigan State University Union and opened fire again. More victims were shot there, and at least one died from their injuries, officials said.

According to police all classes, athletic events and activites are canceled Tuesday and Wednesday.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer says she has been briefed on the shooting, and that Michigan State Police are assisting with the active investigation.

Michigan State Police are asking friends and loved ones not to come to the campus at this time.
