Man shot and killed outside Grand Central Market in downtown LA; shooter at large

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Police are investigating after a man was shot and killed outside Grand Central Market in downtown Los Angeles Saturday afternoon.

The victim was taken to the hospital but died from a gunshot wound to the chest, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

Los Angeles police say the shooter remains at large. No suspect description was available.

LAPD says they have set up a perimeter in the area, and officers are working to clear the very busy Grand Central Market and its basement area, where people were hiding from the shooting.

Cell phone video from inside the market captured the chaotic moment dozens of people run for cover after gunfire rings out.

The video then shows a man lying on the street next to a scooter with bystanders saying he had just been shot, and what appears to be a knife in that man’s hand.

LAPD said the victim was holding a knife in his hand when crews arrived, but it’s not known why.

Officers responded to the shooting in the 300 block of S. Hill Street at about 4 p.m.

The Grand Central Market released a statement Saturday following the shooting that says:

“This afternoon an isolated incident between two people occurred outside of Grand Central Market on neighboring Hill Street. Our market tenants and guests are all safe.”

“While the incident did not take place within Grand Central Market, we will be tightening security and proactively working with proper authorities to further assess the situation.”

“Grand Central Market prides itself as a safehaven for Los Angeles’ global cuisines and cultures; We are devastated to have something occur so close to our door.”

No further details were immediately known.
