Brittney Griner’s return to normalcy involves Dr. Pepper, BBQ and a Christmas tree

Dr. Pepper, Texas barbecue and a Christmas tree are reportedly helping Brittney Griner transition back to normalcy after 10 months of Russian detainment.

The WNBA star is in great spirits and receiving support from the U.S. government after landing in San Antonio last Friday, her agent told CNN.

“She’s had a lot of psychological support,” Lindsay Kagawa Colas said. “The resources are very robust. It’s very supportive and very BG-centered. It’s about her developing agency.”

Griner, 32, is staying with her wife, Cherelle, at an Army medical base, where Colas put up a Christmas tree for the athlete. She enjoyed Dr. Pepper on her flight home, and ate barbecue brought by her family to the medical base.

Brittney Griner sits in the plane as she flies to Abu Dhabi to be exchanged for Viktor Bout on Dec. 9.

“Her energy level was really high,” said Colas, who noted Griner’s diet improved since she left a Russian penal colony.

Griner was sentenced to nine years in prison following a February arrest at a Moscow airport by Russian officials who said they found vape canisters with cannabis oil in her luggage. She was freed last week in a prisoner exchange for Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout.

An eight-time WNBA all-star, Griner won a college championship with the Baylor Bears, a professional title with the Mercury and two Olympic gold medals with the U.S. women’s basketball team.

Cherelle Griner, wife of WNBA star Brittney Griner, speaks after President Joe Biden announced Brittney Griner's release.

Her first trip to a basketball court since her detainment came at the San Antonio base.

“I think it’s fair to say that her picking up a ball voluntarily and the first thing being a dunk … it was really encouraging,” Colas said. “She was really excited.
