Bronx suspect nabbed for fatally shooting girlfriend’s ex in front of victim’s 2-year-old son

A suspect wanted for fatally shooting his girlfriend’s ex in front of the victim’s 2-year-old son in the Bronx has been nabbed, police said Wednesday.

Aaron Rene was arrested Tuesday as he was entering his building and charged with murder, manslaughter and weapon possession.

Rene, 30, came to the aid of his girlfriend who was assaulted by victim Marquis Lane near Park Ave. and E. 167th St. in Morrisania the morning of Feb. 7, according to cops.

Marquis Lane, 31, who was shot to death around the corner from his home.

Police say they recovered video showing Lane, 31, punched his ex, the mother of one of his four children, then knocked her over a guardrail, picked her up and continued to assault her.

Rene, who lives two blocks away, rushed to the scene and allegedly shot Lane, who was taken to Lincoln Hospital but could not be saved.

“The 2-year-old boy was there when it happened,” Lane’s distraught grandmother, Helen Hannibal. “It wasn’t right. It should have never happened.”

The accused killer has one unsealed prior arrest, police said.

The victim had dozens of past arrests, including a number for criminal contempt, police said. Last year he was involved in three incidents in which he was described by cops as emotionally disturbed.

He worked construction and lived with Hannibal, 75, around the corner from where he was shot.

“I loved him,” she said. “And I will love him always.”
