California ending business with Walgreens after abortion pill decision, Gov. Newsom says

California is ending its business with Walgreens and pulling out of a $54 million contract.

The announcement from Gov. Gavin Newsom came after the drugstore chain announced it is halting sales of abortion medication in 21 Republican-led states.

“California won’t be doing business with @walgreens — or any company that cowers to the extremists and puts women’s lives at risk,” the Democratic governor tweeted Monday. “We’re done.”

About half the abortions in the U.S. are carried out through medication such as Mifepristone, CNN reported.

Last week, Walgreens announced it would no longer sell the abortion drug in its brick-and-mortar stores or distribute it through mail to a number of red states.

The decision came in response to numerous threats from attorneys general in the states, which included Kansas, Iowa and others where abortion is still legal.

“We intend to be a certified pharmacy and will distribute Mifepristone only in those jurisdictions where it is legal and operationally feasible,” the company said in a statement last week.

California is now “reviewing all relationships between Walgreens and the state,” Newsom spokesman Brandon Richards said in a Wednesday statement.

In addition to the $54 million contract, the state’s Department of General Services also holds a agreement with Walgreens “to procure specialty pharmacy prescription drugs.”

The contract is used mostly used by the state’s prison health care system, which will now look for other options “for furnishing the same services,” Newsom’s office said in the statement.

Walgreens said it was disappointed in the decision, blaming it on “false and misleading information.”

“Our position has always been that, once we are certified by the [Food and Drug Administration], Walgreens plans to dispense Mifepristone in any jurisdiction where it is legally permissible to do so,” said spokesman Fraser Engerman.
