Elon Musk polls users on when suspended journalists should be allowed back on Twitter

Elon Musk has turned to the Twitter community for input on whether a group of journalists recently booted from the site should be allowed to return.

In a series of tweets late Thursday night, the 51-year-old billionaire said the users were suspended for violating the platform’s policy against sharing location information. Musk claimed the journalists doxed him while covering @ElonJet, an account dedicated to tracking the comings and goings of Musk’s private aircraft. They denied ever sharing his address, arguing they only provided links to the @ElonJet account, which has also been suspended.

“Criticizing me all day long is totally fine, but doxxing my real-time location and endangering my family is not,” he wrote. “If anyone posted real-time locations & addresses of NYT reporters, FBI would be investigating, there’d be hearings on Capitol Hill & Biden would give speeches about end of democracy!”

The Tesla CEO later tweeted a poll asking users how he should handle the so-called offenders.

“Unsuspend accounts who doxxed my exact location in real-time,” he posted, with options including “now,” “later,” “seven days” and “tomorrow.”

The “Now” option was holding the first spot with 43% of the votes when Musk said he would repost the poll with fewer options. He later asked Twitter users to vote on whether the accounts should be reinstated “now” or in ”seven days.”

By Friday afternoon, more than 3.1 million people had cast their vote, with 58.6% agreeing the accounts should be brought back immediately.

Musk has previously relied on the voting method while mulling whether to welcome back certain users. Last month he shared a poll with a simple set up: Vote yes or no to the statement, “Reinstate former President Trump.”

At the end of 24 hours, more than 15 million people voted in the poll, with Trump’s restoration winning by a 52% to 48% vote.

“Vox Populi, Vox Dei,” Musk wrote, using a Latin phrase that translates to “the voice of the people is the voice of God.”
