‘Everything Everywhere All at Once,’ Michelle Yeoh continue awards season success as Oscars near

Everything is looking up for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” ahead of the Oscars.

The multiverse-jumping comedy-drama continued its domination of awards season Saturday night with seven wins at the 2023 Film Independent Spirit Awards, including in the ceremony’s top category of best feature.

Michelle Yeoh won best lead performance, Ke Huy Quan received best supporting performance and Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert took home best director and best screenplay.

“This is too many,” Scheinert said during the ceremony at Southern California’s Santa Monica Pier. “We’re so lucky. … Thank you for everyone who makes crazy, weird independent movies. Those movies changed my life.”

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” also received the awards for best editing and best breakthrough performance for Stephanie Hsu. Its only nominee who didn’t win, Jamie Lee Curtis, was up for the same honor as Quan.

“Thank you for writing such an incredible script, to be here, to be seen, to be heard,” Yeoh said to Kwan and Scheinert during an emotional acceptance speech. “I want to dedicate this to all our mothers. Without our mothers, none of us would be here.”

The wins came a week after the film ” took home outstanding performance by a cast at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. Yeoh, Quan and Curtis also won acting honors. The film previously received the top prize at the Producers Guild of America Awards and the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” leads all films at next Sunday’s Oscars with 11 nominations, including for best picture, best actress for Yeoh, best supporting actor for Quan and best supporting actress for Curtis and Hsu.

Last year, the SAG Awards proved to be a bellwether for the Academy Awards, with both ceremonies giving “CODA” the top honor and with all four of the acting trophies going to the same winners.

The Malaysian-born Yeoh, who also won a Golden Globe for her “Everything Everywhere All at Once” performance, became the first Asian person to win leading film actress at the SAG Awards.

Quan, who won at the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards as well, rose to fame as a child star in 1984′s “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.” He went nearly two decades between acting roles during the 2000s. He was the first Asian performer to win the male supporting SAG honor.

“Everything Everywhere” grossed more than $100 million in North America following its release last March, making it the first film from the A24 studio to do so.
