The Las Vegas politician accused of killing a veteran investigative journalist who exposed a scandal in his office claims he was framed.

“As far as any other evidence goes, as far as when it may have been planted, I couldn’t say,” Robert Telles told local CBS affiliate KLAS on Monday. “Again, I know it’s an incredible story. But that is the story.”

FILE - Robert Telles appears in court during his bail hearing at the Regional Justice Center, on Oct. 18, 2022, in Las Vegas.

Telles, 46, is charged with stabbing journalist Jeff German to death in September 2022. Telles was the Clark County Public Administrator when German began investigating allegations of bullying in his office. German also found that Telles may have been having an affair.

After German’s articles were published, Telles lost his bid for re-election. On Sept. 2, 2022, German was stabbed to death outside his house.

Investigators said Telles’ car was seen near the home and the pol’s DNA was found under German’s fingertips. Additionally, surveillance video captured the killer wearing clothes that were later found at Telles’ home.

“If that’s what people want to believe, they can,” Telles told KLAS. “Again, I’m telling you the truth.”

Telles’ lawyer filed paperwork Monday to withdraw from the case. In the documents, attorney Damian Sheets said Telles “has indicated that he would like to represent himself.” Telles is licensed to practice law in Nevada and has already burned through several attorneys.

“I’m coming out with the truth because I’ve had to sit and wait for some time to speak out,” Telles told KLAS, “just because my counsel advised I shouldn’t say anything whatsoever.”
