Mets trade catcher James McCann to Baltimore Orioles: reports

Catcher James McCann has been traded to the Baltimore Orioles for a player to be named later, according to reports. The nine-year veteran’s departure takes a catcher off the roster — leaving the Mets less cluttered at the position.

The Mets are dealing with a few positional traffic jams and a move at the catcher position wasn’t unlikely. Top prospect Francisco Alvarez is currently the DH option for the Mets, but the role didn’t totally resolve the jam at the catcher position.

The Mets have yet to announce the one-year contract for All-Star catcher Omar Narvaez and Tomas Nido is currently on the roster also.

McCann played 182 games for the Mets in the past two seasons. He slashed .220/.282/.328 during his time in Queens. McCann’s trade is the latest move for the Mets since acquiring All-Star Carlos Correa.

Correa and the Mets agreed on a 12-year, $315 million contract after the infielder was expected to be introduced as a San Francisco Giant.
