Authorities are investigating the death of a missing Jersey City woman whose body was found in a shallow grave in Kearny, according to the local prosecutor’s office.

On Tuesday, the Jersey City Police Department conducted a welfare check on Van Horne Street regarding a missing person’s report, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said.

The results of the welfare check allegedly prompted police to contact the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office for help. During the course of the investigation, the Homicide Unit located an apparent shallow grave in the area of Central Avenue and Third Street in Kearny, where the body of a female was found, Suarez said, adding that the woman was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:53 p.m.

According to prosecutors, the death is considered suspicious and the victim has been tentatively identified as Luz Hernandez, 33, of Jersey City.

The Cause and Manner of Death are pending the findings of the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.

Hernandez was reported missing on Monday.

No arrests have been made at this time.
